nforce 2: single channel/dual channel

I have an MSI K7N2L mobo with an xp2100 and 2x256mb pc2700 ram. When I built this system, i did not know any way of finding out if it was running in single or dual channel mode, but now that i have downloaded the most recent bios, it says at the boot screen that i'm running in single channel mode.

The ram chips are both cheap Azen Ram (I shouldn't have got cheap ram). However, when i got them one of them was bad so i had to rma it. The one i got back was different, the originals had 8 chips on one side and were manufactored by Spectek (I guess Azen ram doesn't manufacture their own ram), and the replacement had 4 chips on each side and i don't know the manufacturer.

There are three memory slots on my mobo, two of which are really close together and the last is a bit further away. I have put both memory chips in the close together slots.

Why is my system not running in dual channel mode? The ram chips are both 256mb pc2700, so shouldn't they work in dual channel even though they are a bit different? Do I need to put them in different slots? Is there some bios setting i need to change?

i have no real experience with the nforce2 chipset...not yet anyways. but off the top of my head, you might have to place the memory in slots 1 and 3, instead of slots 1 and 2. i know for mobos using intel's 865 and 875 chipsets, dual channel support only works if matching memory sits in slots 1 and 3, or 2 and 4, or both i think. also, you said that the stick you RMA'ed was different than the replacement. from what i hear, the nforce2 chipset is a bit pickier about dual channel memory support than other dual channel platforms, so the fact that you have one single-sided memory module w/ 8 chips on one side and another double-sided module w/ 4 chips per side may make for an unsuitable combination of RAM to run in dual channel mode.

Bank 1 and 3 but no matters cause the increase is minimal and performance gain is mostly seen with the graphics part of the NForce 2
