I was ready to buy an Nforce 2, but some people are saying I should wait for Athlon 64

The FX chip will be like 800$ and the regular 64 about 400$ and thats more than I want to spend

Will the barton 2500+ really be that much worse than the lowest end athlon 64? NOT the fx chip that was getting 50% performance over P4 that is like 800$

well it is up to you if you want a good CPU for now get the Athlon XP 2500 and over, it cost much less then the Athlon 64. You can overclock it that even better. My friend askme the same question I told him to buy Barton 2500+ with Abit NF7-S v.2, so he overclocked it to 3200 speed.

Yeah, I think thats a good choice. I'm tired of pulling my hair out over this.

I ordered a 2500+ and a Soltek NV400 which is the nforce 2 single channel chipset. looking forward to playing with it!

Wait... Always wait, there is always something new coming out in a few months.

I disagree completely. Remember when they said it was a better idea to get the 128MB versions of the Geforce4 Ti series video cards to handle the large textures of games like DOOM 3? Well, it's still not out along with several other games. My advice is to take advantage of the falling prices on Nforce2 setup with an AthlonXP Barton. Overclock the Cpu to 2.4Ghz and increase the FSB speed to have a STABLE, FAST, and cheap system! Another reason not to wait, is that the Athlon64 systems along with all new hardware WILL HAVE BUGS that the majority of reviews somehow don't have in their reviews. So, don't be the guinea pig waiting for driver updates, go with what works today. FWIW, I have a Shuttle SN45G Nforce2 system at 211mhz fsb, athlonxp 1.47ghz@2.05Ghz running stable as a rock.

Myself? I've been itching really bad to get myself some nForce 2 action ever since I heard about it and how well Tbred B's and now Bartons are with tweaking. nForce 2 would be to die for compared to my pain in the butt KT266A. But I've decided that since this system has gotten me this far without dire need for any major upgrades I've decided to wait for Athlon 64 to come and see what my options are then. I'm a gamer and some of these next generation CPUs seem to be ready to destroy some new games.

bunnyfubbles,
in my opinion you're on the right track. It's just a question of how long you're willing to wait since you have to consider the DeBugging timeframe of the new Athlon64 systems. Currently, I'm running my FSB at 196mhz and AthlonXP 1700+ speed ----> 1.47Ghz@2.17Ghz @ 1.775volts. so 700mhz o'clock and 4mhz slower bus speed is worth it for me :). I don't see myself upgrading until I graduate from university in the next 2 years.

I just upgraded my 1700+ to a barton 2500+ on the soltek nv400 Running 200mhz FSB for a 3200+ overclock nor problem with stock cooling and no voltage adjustments.

This processor and board rock. Much faster than my 1700+
