I'm not familar with football plays thus I just choose whatever I think may do good. How does one figure out all of these plays?

Also, when I play defense I can never get the guy that I am controlling to do the dirty work. The sacks/tackles are done by the computer most of the time. I usually get lost at where my guy is since there are so many guys on the field just cramping together.

How does one control the main guy and sack the qb or the guy who has the ball?

not really familiar with the 2k series but what i do in madden/ncaa is play the base defense (usually a 4-3) for a while and feel out what they are doing with the ball. usually play a defensive linemen at the start of the play and switch depending on where the ball goes.

on offense you gotta switch it up to keep them guessing. if you get a decent running game going, switch it up with a play action pass here and there. run draw plays and screens every now and then too.

Man-Zone in a 4-3 or 3-4 is usually the way to go.

The corners play tight man coverage with the linebackers to help undrerneath on both short passes or runs, and the safeties to help in the secondary. Only drawback is deep passes on the outside with good receivers - 1 on 1 coverage can ... CAN kill you.

Also, as far as who you're controlling, start with a lineman. Get used to it. Learn how the computer plays. With a lineman odds are once you start getting better you'll start generating sacks and or run-losses. Once you get comfortable with the gameplay control, my next suggestion is to move from lineman to a middle linebacker. This gives you the most flexibility. Once you get good at anticipating runs, you can "stuff" the play right in the gaps, or if you feel brave you can often blitz through a hole on a pass faster than the computer can react (ironic eh?). Also, it forces you to learn coverage - inside linebackers usually key on the running back, but if the back stays in to block you're freed up to either rush or cover the short pass across the inside - giving you double coverage on said receiver.

Also keep in mind, if you pick blitz, coverage assignments shift - your linebackers won't be there to cover the middle and the person you're supposed to cover may be different.
