NFL: What does yards from scrimmage mean?

I hear it all the time, but i'm not sure what it is.

The line of scrimmage is the yard line where the last play ended and where the next play begins from. Is that what you're asking?

No, return yards are counted in total yards but not yards from scrimmage. Yards from scrimmage are only yards gained past the line of scrimmage (where the ball is snapped).
