NFL stats

Every NFL football game I watch I'm amazed at the ridiculous stats they just pull out of their ass two seconds after a play. "Well, turns out this is the first time he's run 100+ yards in a game while playing at home against this team when leading by 15+ points for more than half the game."

What kind of software manages this kind of stuff? Are the stats manually entered or is it all tracked and entered into a database automatically? And how about the queries? Are these prepared stat packages or can they query any set of data/stats/trends based on what they're interested in seeing?

I don't think any football geeks are involved when it comes to the instant stats they pull up during games.

I guess just databases and some really easy to use query tools?

"Stats Inc" I think is the company name. SI had an article about them a while back. Basically there's a big crew of dudes that watch games and pause after every play and write down every distinct feature of a play. What yard it started at, what yard it ended at, what formation, who was doing what, the time, weather, defensive coverage, down, series, time in the game...LITERALLY every possible facet of the situation...

The information is used to compile all these stats as historical facts. Then I guess the commentators get notecards with all of the interesting ones, in case there is a play in the current game on it. i.e. at the beginning of the game they already know that Brian Urlacher has 7 straight games with a tackle for a loss on third down in the red zone when the opponent is running...or whatever. So then he happens to tackle someone for a loss on a run in the red zone on third down, they have that stat available and can add on the current occurence and say it over the air
