NFL Rule question

is it just me or is this a dumb rule

Bengals-JEts game

Jets player blitzes and is a good 2 yards offsides when the play starts...to stop him from killing palmer, an offensive linemen grabs him and palmer throws for 43 yard pass to chad johnson.

now 2 penalties were called, offsides and holding

penalties were offsetting and the play was replayed

shouldnt it have been that the play stands, the only reason for the holding was the offsides...seems kinda dumb that it was a replay of downs, because if a player is offsides and has a chance to really sack the QB, of course the offense will hold or do anything to protect his QB

Holding is a very annoying call to begin with. If they wanted to, the refs could call holding on every play.

Hm... they normally whistle the play dead if he's offsides and unabated to prevent QB sacking.

Which is what it sounds like they should have done if he was that far offsides that the OL had to hold him...

Yes, it just makes me think maybe he was held up but was too quick. There should be some rule where you can opt out of the free play when someone is off sides and just take the penalty yards.

I didn't see the play in question, but I highly doubt he was 2 yards offsides, as that would put him a yard behind the offensive line already, and the refs would have blown the play dead immediately to protect Palmer from getting killed.

Now, since that didn't happen, the offense knows they have a free play and nothing bad can happen, so just don't commit a penalty and you can take a shot downfield or whatever you want to do. The lineman held him, so that negates the whole thing.

If a defensive player jumps offsides, the play isn't blown dead unless 1)the player makes contact with an offensive player before the snap or 2)the player has an unabated line to the quarterback, as mentioned. I didn't see the play, but I'm guessing that the refs either did not feel he had an unabated shot at the QB, or they just blew the call. Were the Bengals pissed about it?

yeah he was too far away to be unabated to the quarterback, i probably exaggerated the 2 yards, but he was coming from the outside blitzing and was clearly offsides, when the play started he was about even with the offensive player set to block him, but he was already running.

basically the offensive player got his right shoulder out and right arm on him and held on (only way the guy wouldnt have ran right pass him)

another quarter second and he would have been unabated toward the QB...

the QB wasnt looking in that direction so never saw the play coming

I was at a bar, so didnt have sound, but they def. didnt look happy


another time they were more pissed:

penington fumbled, but it was ruled an incomplete pass...the refs reviewed it and said it was a fumble, but they couldnt overturn the play on the field

I will never understand why the coaches, announcers and even refs dont understand that plays ruled dead cant be reviewed....
