Who would you pick in the 2006 NFL Draft if you know what you knew now about Reggie Bush and Mario Williams?

I guess the Texans knew what they were doing?

Will Bush ever become the full-time game-changer he was projected to be? Or, more importantly, why isn't he that already?

To have a successful running game the O-Line, blocking schemes and play calling seems to be more important than having an Elite running back.

Bush was probably the best back in the league up until the point he got injured this year.

The best receiving back maybe. Not the best back though.

I don't think so. He's good, but he's no Brian Westbrook.

Um, no. Reggie Bush excels at many aspects in the game, but he is far from the best runner, and not the best receiving back. Hell, Leon Washington does what he does for a fraction of the price.

Not a huge football buff, just testing if I'm banned.

EDIT: Woot! Continue your discussion.

You have GOT to be kidding me!!!

He had ZERO 100 yard rushing games, averaged 3.8 yards a rush, had TWO rushing TDs (in 9-10 games) and ONE receiving game over 75 yards.

I pretty much said from the start that he would never make it as an every down back in the NFL. Just not the right style or build for that. He dances too much, tries to run sideways too much, and can't take any sort of contact without getting injured.

That being said, he's a hell of an "X Factor" that defenses have to respect. A RB with his hands and speed taking passes out of the back field keeps defenses on their toes. He's also a good option for third down/change of pace.

Definitely not worth a number one pick though. Look at the other backs that outrushed him by a long shot in recent drafts.

Hell, just this year rookie backs have been incredible. Chris Johnson for TN, Forte for Chicago, Slaton for TX, Kevin Smith for Detroit. All much more successful rushers than Bush will ever be.

remember, Vince Young was also in the 'why didn't the Texans draft Bush, Young, THEY WASTED THE FIRST PICK' talk.

yeah...right.

Lets not get carried away with the Bush bashing here - he's an excellent player that the D has to account for on every play - and Sean Payton - the best O coach in the game - uses him perfectly, as much as a decoy as an ball carrier or receiver.
Also, saying K.Smith on Detroit is a better runner than Bush is - that's plain ridiculous. Give Bush the Tennessee O line and he'd have a large increase in his rushing stats, I promise you that.

That said, M.Williams is a dominant DE - top 5 in the league already.

Remember this too - people in Texas wanted the Texans to draft Vince Young, not Bush or Williams.

lol?

As for the "Texans knew what they were doing", that's bull. Draft busts are just busts, period, and it's long since been common knowledge that a player's performance in college is no indicator of how they'll do in the pros. I don't even know that you could call Bush a bust as he's been "ok but not great".

Matt Ryan is playing *better* in the NFL than he did in college, interestingly enough. How's David Carr doing?

Considering Reggie Bush's presence in college, he's been a disappointment in the pros so far. He certainly hasn't produced near expectations. Above average, but not the human wrecking ball that played for USC.

If Reggie would just give 110% in the weight room and put on some size then he can be like Westbrook. And until he can grow a pair and take a hit, he won't.

Do you even watch NFL games? No offense, but you have no clue what you are talking about.

First of all....it is a really BIG stretch to say Reggie Bush was the best back in the league before his injury. Yes I agree, he was putting big numbers and doing some work, but your going to put him in front of some of today's greats like AP, Portis, Westbrook, Jacobs, LT, or Steven Jackson, Forte, Slaton, Barber, Grant, Gore, Lynch, Thomas Jones, etc etc. How about the this season's tag team duos like White/Johnson, Williams/Stewart?

Yea, some of these guys are dealing with injuries, but still are leet rushers. (maybe I'm biased towards Forte cause I'm a Bears fan, but one can still argue that he is having a better season than Bush...)

I don't know if Bush is a true "RB." I mean, he has so much versatility that makes him so dangerous. He is a weapon no doubt. He is a punter returner, lines up as RB, WR...an "X-Factor" that can dynamically change the course of a game much like Hester IMO (again Bears fan, sorry for being biased). He makes defenses totally adjust to his abilities which allows for the Saints O to work with a slight edge over some d-fences at times.

I feel he is at his best when he is getting the ball as WR, running the outsides and sidelines, or a dump pass in a screen or what not. This is where he can use agility and speed to make his opponents miss and move down the field. IMO, to be an NFL back, one has to run the middle hard and be successful. As far as his running between the tackles...I have been slightly impressed lately just because he has actually gotten more success at these runs but I still few its his weakness and with Pierre Thomas emerging as a big back, I feel Bush's opportunities to run the middle will be even more lessened.

Let's not bash Bush at all. He has proven himself to be very vital for the Saints.

And back to the question......Bush or Mario (someone mentioned Young too).....I just feel it hard to bash the Texans for what they did with Mario. Yea, Bush would have made a difference too, but everyone knew that the Texans were a work in progress and they wouldn't just be instantly good right after this draft. They had to build this team up piece by piece. Getting Mario was a very smart move for the future. He strengthened their D-Line which IMO, how much success a team will have in the NFL is centered and based around how strong/dominant the O-Line & D-Line are. They are the keystone to the arch, they are the fundamental building blocks of a team.

SO, for the Texans, it was great move. I probably would have done the same thing. I might be biased because I am a strictly a defensive mind fan (due to the Bears leetness and well its pretty obvious, the Bears O has struggled since 85' when Peyton ran the show). As for the Saints, they couldn't pass up Bush.

As for Young....I think I recall that he was somewhat questionable going into the draft. He preformed poorly on his IQ test and the big negative aspect to him was his throwing motion. I think I remember many scouts wondering if he could translate his unique throwing motion and his dominate running (which he would have to learn to run less and stay in the pocket more) from college to the NFL. No doubt did he have leadership skills and that tool of knowing how to win.

Well, to finish my long spiel....I think everything worked out just perfectly. The Saints continued to be a dominate and feared Offense, the Texans strengthened their D and gave Andre a QB (Schaub) and a RB (Slaton). Well, maybe everything didn't work out perfectly....We all know what happened to Mr. Young. Maybe this wasn't such a great draft for the Titans. Could this have been foreseen? Could the IQ tests possibly shown how fragile and weak his mind was?

M. Williams should've been #1. I said it before the draft, and time has proved this out. Reggie Bush is nothing without a power back like lendale white to wear down opposing lines. He's not HORRIBLE, but he's not much more than a punt returner & glorified 3rd down back. He's the homeless man's brian westbrook. He's not much better than kevin faulk. Actually he basically IS kevin faulk

Reggie Bush would be as good or better than say Westbrook due to versatility but he can't stay healthy.

Yike! Are these guys busts or is it still too early? Bush certainly has contributed to his team more than Leinart or Young, but the QB position is the hardest to learn in the NFL, so they say.

It's not about Reggie Bush vs Mario Williams, it's about Mario Williams vs Vince Young. As good as Mario Williams turned out to be, they should of picked Vince Young for sure. He's a hometown guy. They desperately needed (and still do) a big offensive player. Can you currently name any offensive players on the Texans? I can't :p
