NFL question.....coaches/qb's with wireless headsets

iamme

Lifer
couldn't the opposing team pick up the signal and listen in on plays? or do they have a pretty strong encryption/security measures?

there probably isnt enough geeks on the other team to figure out how to do it.

most likely no encryption, probably analog signal.

They even have rules that if the phone from the coordinator's office breaks for one team, the other team cant use theirs. I would think it would carry a harsh penalty.

There's some protection, but they don't go very far to safeguard the system they have, they just assume there's no cheating of that kind. If you were into it, you could use a directional mic and pick up whatever anyone is saying on the field from anywhere in the stadium. It's like using binoculars to steal the catcher signs, one of those things that the teams assume none of them would do to the others.

I was in an NFL stadium yesterday for a High School championship game. The stadium furnished the professional headsets (even though we'd brought our own). This apparently also happens for the real deal, thus decreasing the likelihood of any interception (because it's not their equipment, dammit)

Besides, in the locker rooms they have huge warnings about artificially influencing the outcome of a game like that. It's not worth your career.

Also, in other NFL procedures news, all the uniform rules for the players are posted in two formats - one big poster full of text and one easy-to-use graphical poster. Low IQ, anybody? I wish I'd taken a picture, I had the camera and everything, but I saved all the tape for the game footage.

Expulsion from the league, actually.

Even if they pick it up, they can't do anything. All they do over the headset is call plays. Even if opposing team picks it up, they have only 5-10 seconds to decide on counter-play and tell that to the defense. This is especially hard since defense doesn't have wireless comm.

Motorola PR from a few years ago, about wireless communications on the sidelines

Wireless receivers-enhanced with DigitalDNA from Motorola-built into the quarterbacks' helmets receive messages from the coach, who wears the headset. A Motorola GP350 two-way radio transmits the messages, which are encrypted, preventing the other team from intercepting strategic information.

2nd page of this telex brochure touts their encrypted intercom products being used in NFL coaching applications
