NFL playoff question

The Saints win, Rams win, Seahawks win, Vikings lose

saints would be 8-8
rams would be 8-8
vikings would be 8-8
seattle would be 9-7 and division champs

Saints lost to the vikings
saints beat the rams

st. louis didnt play vikings

i would figure due to head-to-head vikings and saints would be in the playoffs

but according to espn, the saints need a rams loss or

2) Saints win and Seahawks win or tie and Vikings win or tie.

so why do they need the vikings to win or tie?

NFL Tiebreaking procedures

Apparently in a three-way Saints/Rams/Vikings tie, the Saints would be eliminated. So they need the Vikings to win so its only a Saints/Rams tie.

Situation 1 - Saints/Rams/Vikings tie.
Step 1) All from different divisions, so everyone still in.
Step 2) They didn't all play eachother, so everyone still in.
Step 3) St. Louis has the best conference record, so St. Louis gets the first Wild Card Spot, leaving a Saints/Vikings Tie.

Saints/Vikings tie.
Step 1) Vikings Beat Saints, so Vikings get second Wild Card spot.

Situation 2 - Saints/Rams tie. (Because Vikings won)
Vikings get first wild card spot
Step 1) Saints beat. Rams, Saints get last wild card spot.

Then why in the same scenario but with a Panthers loss do the Panthers get in? They didn't play the Vikings.

Oh, and don't forget the rule of football. If given chance to screw themselves, the Vikings will.

Umm... the Saints are playing the panthers. If the saints beat the panthers, implying the panthers lose, the panthers are out. Maybe you meant another team or did you mean if the panthers win?

In case you meant if the panthers win and the vikings lose, along with a rams win
Situation 3 - Panthers/Rams/Vikings tie.
Step 1) All from different divisons, so everyone in
Step 2) Didn't all play eachother, everyone in.
Step 3) St. Louis has best conference record, so St. Louis gets first wild card spot.

Panthers/Vikings tie.
Step 1) Didn't play eachother
Step 2) Panthers have better conference record, so panthers get last wild card spot.
Vikings miss playoffs

You are mistaken.

And, if the Panthers win, they go, tmk.

If you want to want to follow the wild-card tie-breaking procedures and point out where I made a mistake, go right ahead. The OP only asked about a Saints win, therefore implying a Panthers loss.

thats ridiculus...so head to head would count for saints/vikings but not saints/rams

even though its supposed to be the first tiebreaker

ridiculus

rams should not go in ahead of the saints

Head to head isn't fair to use if all the teams didn't play eachother. That's the view of the NFL. In a multi-team tie, the only head to head that matters is if one team beat all the others.

Yeah, I mis-typed. I meant Panthers win.

The way you wrote it is confusing, thats all.

Edit: The saints arent gonna beat the panthers anyway.

The NFC Panthers were discounted last year, yet they took the strong favorite Patriots to the wire.

The only teams guaranteed to choke completely in the postseason are the Vikings and the Eagles. At least the Eagles wait until the NFC Championship to choke. :)

I'm a Saints fan, but we could barely beat the Atlanta practice squad last weekend. I'm also a Panther's fan, and I'm hoping they win just because I think they can do more in the playoffs than NO.

the biggest factor is that the Saints need to beat the Panthers, it is also the most unlikely of all the senarios the Saints need. Don't overlook that, because when it all boils down I seriously doubt the Panthers will lose that game, the Saints have been anything but consistent whereas the Panthers have only lost one game since going 1-7, and that was to Vick and the Falcons in a game the Panthers probably should have won but choked near the end allowing a comeback and OT win for the Falcons.

Yes, if they beat Carolina this Sunday and other Team scenarios kick in.

Basically it would be a Miracle if the Saints make the Playoffs but even getting to this point of having a chance is a minor Miracle in itself.
