NFL NFC East

Bingo.... One of the biggest rivalries in the NFL... Another is Buffalo/Miami

(note: Miami is definitely more South than Jacksonville)

Yeah, the NFC east has always been about rivalries... except Arizona. It doesn't matter which pair now... it's a rivalry. The same can't be said for the other divisions.

why were the cardinals in the NFC East?

why were the falcons in the NFC west?

why was tampa bay in the NFC central?

i like this 4 team divisions alot more.

To preserve all of the old rivalries - not just that one.

Yeh but the OP was referring specifically to the NFC East unless dallas has history with NY and Philly

the thing that absolutely boggled my mind was always how the 49ers and the Falcons & Saints were in the same division. Honestly... I wish the Falcons were in the same part of the country as the 49ers so I could go to Atlanta to see the Braves play

Often in sports it has to do with expansion teams (Vancouver Grizzlies in the Midwest, not the Pacific) or teams that move (Milwaukee Braves to Atlanta, bust still in the NL West pre 1993).
NFL must be for rivalry reasons. It's also not as big a deal in the NFL, since you only travel to one place a week. For a team like the Braves to constantly fly back and forth between SF, LA, SD, etc. and Atlanta was pretty unfair, IMO.
