NFL/football question

Nocturnal

Lifer
I notice there are many quarterbacks like Peyton and Big Ben off the top of my head that do this.

Also another question, why do they point to certain players on the other team?

Any ideas?

I believe they point to players on the other team to indicate they might blitz or to make sure someone has their blocking assignment.

I always thought it was to signal the man (reciever, RB, TE) in motion ( Ie to switch sides, positon, etc). But what do I know, Im a lions fan. For me, if I see our guy doing it, its a signal to the fans he is about to get sacked 🙁

when in shotgun formation its to let the center know when to snap the ball, since they probably won't be able to hear from that distance (especially on the road).

LOL. Too true.

Most QB's lift their leg twice to signal that he is ready to snap the ball

When he points to another player he is most likely changing the playing, calling an audible, or telling one if his players to block for him.

Its for various things.

one to send rb, TE, wr in motion. It is also used for the center to know when to snap the ball when in shotgun formation, when its too load or just to throw off the defense.

When the QB is under center its just to send someone in motion. pinching or tapping the center inner thigh is typically done to snap the ball especially when you doing hard counts.

As for pointing its either to tell one of their players to pick up that guy. audible or as I believe Peyton Manning does 9/10. Just to confuse the other team into thinking its an audible when he's really not doing anything.

What a bunch of wrong information. They're lifting their legs so they can fart loudly to throw off the defense obviously.

They do it under noisy situations where the crowd is intentionally making noise to keep the players from hearing the quarterback's verbal calls. Part of the "home team advantage". 😉

I like you, too.

If the QB is under center and the leg moves back: Sends WR or TE or RB into motion (Chad Pennington seems to like to just throw his arms to do this)

If they are in Shotgun and they stomp their foot on the ground in front of them: It is for the line to get set and for the center to know to snap the ball

If the center is pointing, or the QB is pointing: They are signaling possible blitzes and blocking assignments.

If the QB backs away from center and starts making hand motions: Indicates an audible of sort; meaning he made a pre-snap read on the defense and believes there is a better play to run. (Jeff Saturday is excellent at this for the Colts)
