i just installed my abit NF7-S2, and i have everything connected...turned it on, the fans come on and then it just shuts off. LED1 (5vSB) stays red but the LED2 (VCC) comes on green but then goes off.... is my power supply bad?

Im using a AMD Athlon XP 2000+ processor and a new stick of 256 PC2100 DDR DIMM Ram

Hi Matt2685 and Welcome to the Forums!

While PSU's are one of the common sources of problems, I would do a bit more diagnosing b4 running out and spending more $s.

My guess is that something is not connected properly or is grounding out.

May I suggest that you reveiw THIS, an illustrated (photo's)guide to building a PC.

If after you have looked through the guide and feel all is hooked up OK (stand-offs under the mobo, confirm IDE cables are connected improperly etc), then it might be time to pull the mobo from the case, place it on a phonebook etc. Install only CPU (+HS&F), ram and vid card. Then hook up KB, mouse and monitor and see if you can get to boot and see the POST screen.

Good Luck with it.

well i put a new power supply in, i have disconnected everything and re connected it numourus times and still no luck.... i even did the bench test with the mobo outside of the case and it still only stayed on for a couple of seconds....it will turn on, then shut off... ive read thru the manual more times then i can count. would a bad video card shut it down? the fan on the video card when powered on kinda stumbles around, while all the other fans spin at normal rpms...

What kind of power supply do you have?

Also, are you sure that motherboard will automatically try to run that memory at it's rated speed rather than the 333mhz your cpu wants to run the fsb at? I don't know much about your motherboard but that could be a problem.

Also have you reset the cmos?

well it ended up being bad memory... i put in the old sticks and it stays on. now the problem is nothing shows on the screen, ive plugged the monitor into another computer and it worked fine. plug it into the video card and nothing happens. ive used the jumper to reset the cmos, but still nothing. i swear, its one problem after another. and that new psu is a antec 350w

The XP 2000 does run at 133mhz, with a multi of 12.5. So PC 2100 w/b matched properly

Matt2685, Please the specs of the components you are installing in the mobo. Ex. what gfx card etc?

Also, when you bench tested, what compnonents did you install?

Video Card: Nvidia geforce2 mx400 s64m
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2000+
PSU: Antec 350w
RAM: Kingston 256MB PC2700

When i did the bench test i only had the video card, ram, cpu+heatsink & fan, and keyboard connected. but now the screen is showing no signal when on but there is no beeping and the monitor has been tested on another computer.

Well, the card although old is AGP 4x, so it should work. The older AGP 2X won't.

Is the card known to be working?

Are you sure it's really seated well. Sometimes with new mobo's it's hard to get them in all the way.

My mobo's a slightly diff version, but I think you s/b getting beeps. The bad ram s/h resulted in the "bad ram" looong beep. If the case speakers are not hooked up, do so and see if it'll tell you something.

Beep codes for NF7 mobo's HERE

Did you make absolutely certain the cooler is making proper contact with the core? No silver compound smeared over the chip either right? Have a speaker connected to hear the beeps?

yes the speaker is connected and no beeps... ive removed and installed the video card a few times making sure its seated... i even went out and bought a new ATI Radeon 9550 AGP video card and it still wont work. i was told on another forum that no beeps means the motherboard is bad so its going back to tigerdirect.com

I SWEAR!!!! well i removed everything boxed it all up ready to go back...wasnt satisfied that i did everything i could so i took it back out and benched it again... Plugged everything in, made sure the cpu and HS was seated properly, benched it on the box before installing it in the case. turn it on and a few seconds later i get the two tone seirn... ive reseated the cpu and HS 3-4 times now, each time removing the old thermal compound with 99% alcohol and reapplying the compound. everything is brand new except CPU which is 6months old and the case... ive installed three differnet sticks of ram in different slots and still the same beep. the 4 pin atx cable is attached and i have cleared the cmos more times then i can count.. ive run outta ideas

Was the mobo new or refurb.? With the case open...try lifting up on the main ATX power cables (so the big bunch of wires are not so "bent over" and not putting pressure on the ATX socket) and try starting your PC. Be cautious not to touch anything else except the insulated cables since you've got live power.

I had a similar problem once and it turned out being a bad ATX socket. The board seemed dead and when I "relieved" the sidewise pressure between the ATX socket and ATX power cables...the system would start up and go dead again when I took my hand off the ATX cable.

Regards,

Bud

Someone posted the other day when that happens you should bend the thermistor in the CPU socket up a bit to make certain it contacts the bottom of the CPU and it will resolve the issue. Try it and see if that gets things going.
