NF7-S - enough goop on the Northbridge?

I'm going to go ahead and install the NF7-S in my old case, with my old CPU and memory. Because I can, that's why. :D

Who knows? I may get a substantially higher FSB OC. Anyway:

In the past, I've always yanked the HS off the NB to find a dab of white goop. I replace that w/a slathering of AS and it always works better.

I've seen some pics of the NB w/the HS removed...some have a dab of goop, others look pretty good.

I do plan on overclocking the snot out of the board. I guess it would be a good idea to go ahead and remove the stock goop and throw on some AS5, right?

What do you guys think?

Yes, you should place some AS5 on the northbridge. That stock stuff sometimes isn't spread evenly on the northbridge and it's not as good as AS5.

Im running the Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe. And my northbridge is so hot i cant put my finger there for more than 2 secs. Should i yank the HS off and put a dab of goop on. I dont have arctic silver either. I got this cheapo Antec reference silver thermal compund. Probably wont do as good a job but will it help?

Go for it, just don't break anything since you be voiding your warranty. A question for you is how hot does your southbridge feel? Peace.

Hmm, MichaelD hasn't reported back, I hope his system is ok.

Hey guys, I'm here! :D

Sorry about that. I got carried away trying to milk this old CPU for all it's worth. I found out (inconclusively) a long time ago that 2.00GHz is about the limit for this chip. I've hit 2.10GHz, but that was at 1.85v and the little extra boost in benchmarks isn't worth system integrity to me.

Now that I have the Supa Dupa Overclocking Board, I've found out Conclusively that 2.00GHz is the reasonable limit for this POS CPU...at 1.725v which is pretty darn good. Though I'm only at 2.00GHz, it's at a 200MHz FSB. :) So that ain't bad.

This is a really nice board. Lotsa ports, expansion options, BIOS controlls, etc. Worth every penny.

Next week, I'll get my stuff (I just moved....waiting on my stuff) and in there is a new-in-the-box XP2500Barton from May, 2003. If I don't get much past 2.00GHz, at least I'll have the 512mb cache. Should provide a small boost.

I'll throw some pics up in a new thread here in a little while.

OH, PS

Per my original post in this thread, I always yank off the NB HS and put AS on. You will feel the diff when you touch the HS. Before it gets warm, after, it gets hot. That shows you that the heat is transferring effectively.

I'm betting you get 2.2GHz easy. My chip is from week 13 of 2003 and it goes well beyond 2.2GHz on my NF7-S.

Oh, how I wish. 2.00GHz is the stable ceiling on this chip. On the old 8RDA+ rig, I could do 210MHz FSB, but only at 1.85v, and that wasn't completely stable. 200MHz at 1.725v, OTOH, is rock solid.

Oh; I most DEFINITELY hope that you're right!!!

I plan on putting the Barton on the NF7-S and transferring the whole shebang into my yet-to-be-modded LianLi PC65B. It's gonna be niiiiiiiice.
