pc club had a killer deal on a crapy gigabit switch. so i got one. its the netgear GS105. after rebate it was only 15 bucks!

anywho. i can not for the life of me get the jumbo frames options in the network configureation.. window. (?)..... ive tried the last 5 months of drivers. its just not there.

On system 2, everything is fine. its a dfi ultra-d.

also my xfer rates are only 33/mbps.........

The switch has nothing to do with whether or not you see an option for jumbo frames in your NIC properties -- that's determined by the NIC and its drivers only. Many gigabit NICs don't support jumbo frames.

There are a couple of different versions of the GS105. V2 and later definitely support jumbo frames. Some v1 also support jumbo frames. Search Netgear's tech support pages for something like "switch" and "jumbo" and you'll see their notes on which models support jumbo frames.

33 MB/s is decent performance for network file transfers on a random computer. 33 Mb/s is poor even for 100 Mb/s networks. B = byte = 8 bits = 8 b.

Network performance should be tested independently of the drive subsystems and the file transfer protocol, etc., before tweaking the network level and buying new switches, etc. Odds are that if there's a problem it isn't the switch.

To diagnose switch problems, you can try connecting with direct cables (gigabit doesn't need crossover cabling). You might need to manually assign and use IPs. Direct wire naturally supports jumbo frames.

E.g. new testing using iperf 1.7:

server: iperf -s
client: iperf -c server -l 64k -t 21 -i 3 -r

Ok, i guess i wasn't clear. above i stated i can not find the jumbo frame options in my nic's driver configureation window. not my swtich. There just is no option for jumbo frames. Did nvidia lie again?

My particular GS105 does support jumbo frames. however it is an unmanaged swtich, as most are. So it either does support it or doesnt not. there is not configureation for the switch.

AS for the transfer rates i am referring to bytes not bits. No one besides corporations ever uses bits in terms of a relative speed.

on t100 i was getting 11-12 megabytes per second.
on t1000 i am getting 33 megabytes per second.

any other thoughts?

Did nVIDIA specifically say that that chipset supports jumbo frames? In that case, you might say that they lied. More likely they're just stupid at some level -- such details are often lost in translation.

For example, at present there are some Intel chipsets for which one set of documents clearly state support for jumbo frames, while some other ones clearly say they don't. Of course, the docs which say they support jumbo frames are wrong -- we'd care less and understand better otherwise ("oh, maybe they didn't support them in earlier revisions, but they do now, how nice"). Too bad it ain't so.

nVIDIA has some rudimentary on-line / web-based support. You might try taking up the issue further with them there.

i looked through the documentation on my board and it states that it does along with pictures. Oh well, nvidia has really been slipping this past few years with their drivers. ill hope that it will be fixed at a later date.

I looked at the on-line manual, and didn't see it. Maybe you can point it out.

AFAIK, the chipset doesn't support it, so it's not a driver issue. If it's a driver issue, you could take it up with nVIDIA. If it's a documentation / manual issue, then depending on the original author of that part of the documentation, it might be an Abit issue or an nVIDIA issue.
