Nexus Purple Screen and bricks

What the hell just happened? I was using my Nexus with a stock rom and all of a sudden the screen gets really pixelated / staticy and everything turns purple. The touchscreen and buttons stop working. When I take out and put back in the battery the thing doesn't power on anymore...

What was the custom recovery? Sounds like a hardware issue but unfortunately coincident to rooting.
