Nexus One won't get an official ICS update.

According to Google the phone is too old to be upgraded. While this is obviously bullcrap, since the Nexus S is really close in terms of specs, the thing that bugs me the most is that a Nexus phone had the same upgrade path as the Galaxy S i-9000.What is even the point of releasing a phone line if they're not even going to support it decently.Ridiculous.

In what ways has the Nexus One not been decently supported? It's a 2 year old phone and still gets updates

1. It's gotten Gingerbread, the latest of Updates
2. It's a phone that no one outside of developers/tech savy people have in any appreciable amount
3. Its a nexus phone which means it will be easy to ROM it.

So yeah,

I think it's BS too. I'm sure the community will come up with a hacked version but this only reaffirms my belief Android terrible update support starts from Google on down.

The Nexus one has a horrible gpu which is likely a big problem when it comes to running ICS. The Nexus S on the other hand has the same gpu as the Galaxy Nexus and Droid Razr so it is in much better shape.

Apple doesn't support phones for an unlimited amount of time either.

The GPU argument MIGHT be valid but i think that's BS too, look at all the adreno 200 devices running WP7 perfectly. And just to be clear:the adreno 200 at 800x480 runs better than an SGX530 at 960x640.The N1 is not even 2 years old and it has already been scrapped, while the 30 months old 3gs runs ios5 like a champ.I'm disappointed by the fact that the Nexus line is barely different from other high end phones.I mean if the N1 stops getting support at the same time as the i9000 that means that nexus phones are not so special. And to you guys that make the argument that there will be plenty of ROMs(which is obvious):no ics for the N1 also means driver problems for qsd8x50 devices like the evo4g and the incredible. If from now on only 1 new version of android comes out each year, nexus phones will get just 1 huge upgrade. That is clearly BS.

Im using a N1 as my temp phone until the Galaxy Nexus comes out and it is still no slouch at all after 2 years. No real reason for it not to get ICS.

But in the end, it doesnt really matter as CM will get it on anyways.

Google promised 18 months of support from day 1. So it's not like they're backing out of their promises.

They did? I thought that the 18 months period was something that google enforced to make the manufacturers update their high-end devices.Never heard stuff like that for the Nexus line.

Few things, the 3GS runs iOS 5 about as well as the 3G runs iOS4, not exactly well.

Second, the Nexus One started with 2.1. It received a big update in 2.2, plus the smaller 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 updates. It also the big 2.3 update, and 2.3.1 through .7 smaller updates. The N1 is probably one of the better supported phones every made. But, its showing its age now, especially with the archaic Adreno 200 GPU. With such a small customer base actually using it, its better for Google to focus their efforts on the far superior Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus.

who really cares? when the GN is release, my N1 will be held as a back up. Who plans on keeping the N1 that long anyways... besides, it will still be usable in its current state

There is next to no chance that HTC will update any of those other first gen snapdragon phones to ICS.

Like it or not the Nexus 1 is a obsolete phone that never sold well in the first place. Galaxy S i9000 have a lot more justification to complain since their phones are newer and actually have fairly capable hardware.

The 3GS is not a valid comparison since it is still being sold, the Nexus 1 on the other hand was discontinued quite a while ago.

I think any phone, even dual core phones with less than 1GB RAM may not fare well with ICS. So a phone with an older single core CPU with limited RAM and spotty GPU may well run it but no very well. What's the point!

I believe the Desire HD/Inspire 4G is first gen snapdragon, and I believe Google will be releasing the code for ICS to run on it. Whether HTC follows suit, who knows. Doesn't really matter though for those of us who are rooted. The second CM9 comes out from the Cyanogen team, we'll have our updated OS. Nobody wants that HTC bloat anyway.

The nexus one doesn't have enough rom for ics without using apps 2sd. I think its a similar situation to when the g1 couldn't officially support eclair. Plus the n1 didn't sell well anyway.

The n1 is a great phone but it is 2 years old in 2 months and it did not sell that well either. I'm typing this message on a tbolt which is a snapdragon phone and I'd expect this to get ics since I would hope the libraries to support it are already included in the asop code. Then again HTC seriously is sucking lately with updates so who knows if HTC will port it back to say this or the incredible 2

Just one thing. The 3GS does run iOS 5 well. A lot better than iOS 4, in fact. The 3G was slow on iOS 4 because Apple messed up. But that one remains the only phone affected so far.

I know this because I have a 3GS running iOS 5 here.

But that's Apple. The thing here is Google is officially saying **** all to old hardware that might not be that old yet. GPU argument is not a good one because Android has never used the GPU extensively, and I think we have been through a similar discussion in the Galaxy Nexus/ICS thread.

Also as mentioned, Windows Phone 7 runs very smooth on Adreno 200, so there is no reason to believe Google can't achieve the same thing on N1 if they tried.

ICS has hardware acceleration so the gpu argument could be relevant.

Even if they could make the Adreno 200 run ICS why bother? The Nexus 1 was an unpopular phone discontinued a long time ago and the Adreno 200 is obsolete as well.

WP7 has hardware acceleration as well. Mango brings browser hardware acceleration.

Yes, but that really isn't relevant to ICS. No doubt Google could make it run on the Nexus 1 but there really is no reason to bother doing so.

Indeed. It doesn't make sense to lower the bar and limit progression because of the relatively small number of people who bought the N1.
