I am totally depressed that it won't be easy to find this feature (for free) on another phone.
"Easy" depends on your ability/willingness to root your phone. Overall, though, you are correct. The N1's ability to actually use this feature as intended (and the fact that T-Mo hasn't locked it down) is pretty much unique right now and could be for a while. That is one of several reasons why it's going to be tough for me to switch to a different phone in the near future.

All you need is an Android phone, root it and install wireless tether.

Simple stuff...
Simple for the average AT member, yeah, but many people don't want to mess with rooting and voiding their warranty.

Plus, the real reason I can't switch is that I am still getting $10 unlimited data on T-Mobile since their systems don't force the N1 to get an "Android" plan... Some people even have grandfathered unlimited $5 T-Zones with the N1.

Yeah, had things been a bit different, I never would have quit TMobile...

Had I known this about the N1, I probably would have bought one. Though I do very much dislike its on-screen keyboard.
