Nexus 7 power on problem - most hold power button >15 seconds to turn it on

I have a power-on issue with my Nexus 7. If I power down, I can't turn it back on, unless I hold the power button for 15-20 seconds or something.

However, once it's powered on, it works perfectly fine.

It appears I am not alone in experiencing this issue:

This is running stock 4.2, although I think it happened before with 4.1 recently too. It's hard to say, because I rarely power down.

Mine had that issue once. Actually, I think what it was it the battery died while it was unplugged. Anyways, running a ROM on it, and I don't have the issue.

I've been trying it for the last 15 minutes. It doesn't happen every time, but it seems to happen most of the time.

It seems an RMA may be in order. If it gets replaced, this would be Nexus 7 number 5 for me.

3. Worked fine, but I dropped it on pavement and smashed it to smithereens. Yeah I'm an idiot.
4. Current one, with this power on issue. I never had this issue with the other three Nexus 7 units.

I wonder if it could be a software issue, esp. given SilthDraeth's experience.

Do you have any root/rom manager app installed, and/or recently updated? I have ROM Toolbox installed and there was this setting somewhere hidden and for whatever reason 10 second delay was checked by default. I changed it to "No Delay."

Non-rooted.

I recently updated to 4.2, but it happened on 4.1 too.

Mine did this yesterday. Its only done it the one time but for a while I thought it had died. I'm still on 4.1 and everything is stock.

Our Kindle Fire HD did this once too' maybe its just a random event with Android.

So it's not even getting to the boot animation for 15+ seconds? Very odd. I can't really see it being a hardware issue, hate to say but I wonder if a factory reset would help?

I would do complete factory image reflash of 4.2, downloaded directly from Google server. I'm not talking about factory data reset from the setting menu but complete reflash. If that doesn't fix the problem, I would contact Asus for warranty replacement.

Had sort of a similar issue. Device goes to sleep with 85% battery, WiFi disabled. I'd get up in the morning and find that it shut off during the night. Turn it on (holding the power for an inordinate length of time) and see that it is down to 20%.

When I look at the battery in system settings, it looks like the battery drained while the device was turned off.

Did this the past two nights. I flashed a new ROM this morning, going to see if it happens again before looking into repair. Been rock solid up until now.

I think that might be it. I've noticed similar behavior on some devices when the battery was really low (Nook color, nexus one)

I saw a couple posts at XDA that indicated atypical charging behavior when the battery is really low.

My problem was fixed, no idea what might have caused it.

Nope. It happened again with the Nexus 7 nearly fully charged. This is pretty irritating.

Where did you get it at? Some stores have been known to be reselling refurbished units without explicitly stating it.

I wouldn't worry about Future Shop for that sort of thing. When one gets returned as defective, they just mark it DOA and send it back. Not the same as some small mom-and-pop shop.

And if it's returned as working, they just lower the price by 5% or so and put it back on the shelf as an open box. It's pretty easy to tell if it's open box anyway, since the sticker would be broken.

Contacted both Google for a Google Play issue (no app updates working) and Asus (power on issue).

Asus suggests the Nexus 7 is defective. I have started an RMA.

Might be a JB issue. After I flashed a JB rom to my TF101, I started having power-on issues: I have to wait some 5+ minutes after powering off, or I can't power it back on. The issue is persisting after I wiped and reflashed ARHD 3.51 and restored my nandroid.
