My Nexus 7 2012 broke so I’m in the market for a new small (7–8 inch) tablet. My requirements are:

Stock or near stock Android
7 – 8 inch
Good performance
Good battery life
Under $200

The Nexus 7 2013 seems to be what I want but I wanted to get other opinions first.

I am also looking at the MeMO Pad 7 but am concerned about performance. The performance of my old Nexus 7 was good under KitKat but sucked under Lollipop so much so that I was on the verge of downgrading it back to KitKat. If the MeMO Pad 7 performance is similar to my old N7 under Lollipop than I want nothing to do with it.

I always recommend the Shield Tablet K1 at this price point.

Although you couldn't go wrong with a N7 2013, assuming you get one in good shape. Mine's a champ on Marshmallow.

I recently found myself in a similar position. I realise you said stock or near stock android, but I decided to try an ipad mini 2 (bought second hand for £160 including trade in of the old nexus) which is working pretty well most of the time for what i want.

I just bought the Dell Venue 7840 (recently $199) to replace my Nexus 7 2012. It was between that or the shield, and since my main usage was watching movies/twitch streams and browsing I decided the superior screen of the Dell was more important. The shield certainly has better GPU performance... but since I never game I'd probably never really take advantage of it.

So anyway, the OLED screen is GORGEOUS and the performance is hilariously faster than the 2012 nexus 7. Its only on Android 5.1 (near stock android at least) and dell has a poor history of updates so there is a chance it never gets marshmallow but man its an awesome device so far. Battery life has been excellent too.

Basically anything will feel amazing coming from a Nexus 2012. I've never seen or used an iPad Mini or Shield, so I can't say for sure the Dell is the best device in $200 price range but I am very impressed. Depending on your usage, the Shield and its superior performance (and fast updates) might be better, but the screen on the Dell is worth the price of admission for me. Its a beautiful device overall.
