Nexus 4 + Lollipop = Disaster!!! (Reverted to 4.4.3)

My GF's N4 was pushed OTA Lollipop...

1. No Google Apps (GMAIL, PlayStore, Maps) load successfully. Just hang.
2. Phone overall MUCH slower and laggier.
3. Google Settings app doesn't start. Shuts down immediately.

Absolutely horrible. Have rebooted 3 times. No change.

What do? Phone is practically bricked.

doesn't your sync'ed gmail account backup your text messages on hangouts and apps etc. I'd imagine once you sign back in you get your hangouts text messages back.

I ended up rooting it / unlocking it and installed 4.4.3. Since her N4 updated to 4.4.4, she experienced a massive decrease in battery performance, so I want to see if reverting to 4.4.3 will help that problem.

All-in-all the process was pretty easy.

Biggest problem was the second the new install found WiFi, it began downloading system updates and pushing notifications, so deleting these from cache (as su) and then disabling the notifications was the biggest PITA of all. Not sure if I really 'fixed' that.

SHAME on Google for releasing such a half-baked OS (Lollipop) and poo on them for not making it easier to ignore/disable/prevent OTA system updates.

Did you try doing a factory reset with with lollipop or flashing a stock lollipop image instead of 4.4.3? Lollipop certainly hasn't been issue free, but issues you've had have not been common either. It may have been that the update didn't install properly, or maybe the phone was borked prior to the update.

Strange...I did a factory flash to Lollipop and didn't have these problems. Only weird thing is that after a factory reset I need to do a hard reset or the phone will just hang on the boot screen. Worked fine otherwise.

I factory reset + installed stock 4.4.3.

In the process, reading through forums, I saw quite a pattern of people downgrading from Lollipop.

I had some issues the first few days with battery life but once I got that figured out Android 5 has been a huge improvement on my Nexus 4.

I'm a firm believer of backing everything up before upgrading, then installing the OTA, then doing a Factory reset, whenever a new version of the O/S comes out.

It's no different than PC's - I never upgrade O/S's, always do clean installs.

I've had Zero issues with lollipop.

Nexus 4 got lollipop yesterday. Seems to be a touch laggier than previously but nothing terrible so far.

Her N4's battery life was about 4-5 hours total, mixed use, under 4.4.4. She noticed a sudden change after that update. After reverting to 4.4.3, she got 9 hours on battery with 80% charge remaining yesterday. Seems to have fixed her battery issue.

I factory reset my N4 as soon as I put 5.0 on it. I have no problems and it's definitely better across the board than Kit Kat.

She's happy with the way things are. I'll leave it at 443.

When I get a new phone, I'd like to experiment with installing Lollipop on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Wonder if it would work?

Wife's Nexus 4 got lollipop. It actually runs pretty great. My Nexus 7 got it & it sucked donkey balls.
