Nexus 10 vs Nexus 7

Let us know what you think DeLerium. I'm more concerned with the size difference, performance, and screen. I don't care about HDMI out or portability, this stays at my house. I'm curious about how comfortable it is to hold while on the couch, in bed, etc...

Then get the Nexus 10. I find the Nexus 10 to be lite and have no issues with holding it on the coach, bed or the can.

Absolutely not.
I don't even do that with my phone, why would I do it with a tablet?
I've seen and heard enough stories about people getting killed, run over by vehicles and trains, or walking into a ditch all because they were too stupid to pay attention to where they were walking to while on Facebook or Twitter.

He mentioned "how comfortable it is to hold" as an important feature to him, so why not get a 7-8" tablet?

B/c depending the person, they may find a Nexus 10 to be perfectly comfortable to hold. I do. And being that the OP plans to use it at home, the display size makes it a no brainer.

Well for me having owned both the 7 and 10, I find the 7 much more comfortable to use for prolonged periods. The weight and size difference was quite noticeable to me.

Thanks for the info. If I could find one in a store I'd buy it and try it out for a few days, but they're hard to find.

Some Walmart stores have the 32GB model. Check Staples too.

Do you mainly use the 10 in portrait mode or landscape mode? It seems like thumb typing would be much more difficult on a 10 inch tablet too.

thumb typing is decent on the Nexus 10 even without a split keyboard. It would be nice if Google introduced it in their next iteration. And no I don't want a some craptastic 3rd party keyboard.

Gesture typing is all I need on a tablet. No one in our house types on any tablet, be it an iPad or a Nexus, with two hands, let alone with their thumbs. It's all one handed, and swipe style typing makes this a breeze.

The only problem I'm having with my nexus 7 is with the scrolling, I don't know how to phrase it, I inertia maybe? When I'm scrolling and flick it to scroll faster a lot of the time it just stops. On my other devices it will keep scrolling a bit longer and faster. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

The scrolling is absolutely horrible. Just flicking homescreen to homescreen is an issue. I think it's the larger screen.

If google requires you to flick 100 pixels across (for example). That 100 pixels on a phone is easily doable with a finger. On a tablet you have to slide further. That's why it's hard to scroll.

On the Nexus 10, the resolution is so high, that 100 pixels isn't very large, so it's still easy to flick.

These are my initial observations about the Nexus 7. I also like the welcome email and the users guide. Why didn't we get this for the Nexus 10 and 4? Seems like they cared more about the Nexus 7 launch but not the other products? Oddly enough I have a Galaxy Nexus welcome email in my mailbox and a Nexus One also from long time ago. Never got one for my Nexus S.

Yeah, had it too on my Nexus 7. But Nexus 4 scrolls great. Weird.

I use it in landscape. Sometimes I use it in portrait if I'm browsing a forum, that does not support Tapatalk.

Thumb keyboard by BeanSoftApps uses a split keyboard so it's very easy. You can even adjust how big or small the keys are and choose which 3 keyboard layouts (QWERTY,etc) you prefer Can also use it on the far right for one thumb typing. There are several sizes and configurations. Can also cutomize it by key binding You can see some examples in their Quick Start Guide. beansoftapps.com

Nexus 7 is ergonomic but the device feels slow as hell. This is a quad core for goodness sake. I know the CPU enthusiasts will jump on me and say how this is last generation's CPU, but this is faster than the Galaxy Nexus, iPad 3, iPad 2, meh. Oh well.

I think you're mistaking performance for "feelings." I definitely see where you're coming from, but Nexus 7 is not slow in a sense that it does take hella longer to finish a job than a comparable device. As a matter of fact, it is faster than many devices in the same (or even pricier) class - Surface RT coming to mind. Note the striking similarity between the two devices straight from the horse's mouse.

Nexus 7 feels laggy and stuttery, for example, compared to iPads. But I would not equate (admittedly quite annoying) stutters with general performance. At least you will need a bit more qualification than a blanket statement, "it's slow as hell." Slow as hell compared to.. what? A desktop?

P.S. Has anyone tried "Force GPU Rendering" in Developer options? How does it change the smoothness in Nexus devices?
