Nextel: $10 phone, free incoming minutes and 5000 FF miles, but is Nextel any good?

All phones at Nextel Website get the following discounts:

1. $100 instant discount
2. $40 credit for first months service
3. Free shipping
4. Free activation

All you need to do is sign up for a rate plan of at least $54.99. The cheapest phone, the i30sx, is $10 after the above discounts. Very nice basic model on paper, unless "sx" means sux.

The cheapest plan with free incoming minutes is $60. You only get 300 outgoing minutes, so have people call you! The National Rewards Plan is $55 for 500 minutes and 2500 N/W minutes.

Also get 5000 Delta FF miles going through this link: 5000 bonus miles

All the rate plans include free nationwide roaming and free voice mail. You can use the phones overseas too, but very expensive! Good for travelers, but the BIG QUESTION is "How is Nextel's quality of service?" Another caveat is that the accessories are expensive if you get them at the Nextel site.

Well I've got a nextel phone, and I haven't had any problems with it. Of Course I've had phones through Sprint PCS, Cingular and Verizon and never had any problems with them either, so maybe Im not as picky as some people or just have good luck=) I got the free incoming minutes last christmas when i got my i85s phone and it has worked perfectly for me since then, I just cancelled my home phone since incoming calls are unlimited and I got 500 minutes outgoing at the time. One thing I really like about Nextel is their wireless web is unlimited, I know some of the other carriers charge you a per minute fee or it uses your airtime while on the internet but Nextel doesn't charge you per minute or take away any minutes from you. It does cost 10 dollars for the internet access (they do have a 5 dollar plan that used to be good but now it just plain sucks).

BTW im in Kansas City and have only used it mainly here and in Canada (but in Canada it was on another providers network).

nextel has a great digital network, and great quality. The only drawback is that their network is very small and only in metropolitan areas and in suburbs

cheapest rate plan with free incomming calls is 54.99, but no free ld, 5$ more gives you free ld,
149.99 gives you unlimited local calls,
word of advice do not get the i30sx its a toy. made for OLD people who are afraid of techno stuf...
I would get the i90c, or i95cl (nextels' color unit)
-BTW i'm a nextel Billing Research REP.

I've been with AT&T Wireless, Powertel (Voicestream), US Cellular, Spint PCS, Bellsouth Mobility, Cingular, and Nextel. Nextel is the only contract I have ever reviewed. Been all over the US, and never had a problem getting a signal. You can even use your Nextel phone in parts of Canada (i.e. Toronto) and make free local calls.

So to answer your question, they are hands down the best out there IMHO. More expensive than most, but worth it. Check out the i95cl. Very cool color screen phone.

i love nextel. I have one of the i90s and use direct connect with my colleagues all the time. Free Direct Connect is like mobile to mobile...walkie talkie style...love it! and the fone has a lot of great features like java apps and you can download them too!

By far the best service I have ever used. I have the i90, which works perfectly. The problem with Nextel is that their phones are a little larger than others, but they are much tougher. I have dropped fewer calls in the +/- 6 months I have owned the phone than I did in a day with Sprint, and that may seem like an exaggeration, but it is not. I could not recommend Nextel enough. Service in KC is excellent.

SPRINT SUX!

I have a Nextel i1000 plus and their service (Michigan) is pretty good. I am looking to get a new phone too and I just looked at the i30sx today at Comp USA. I gotta tell ya, it did feel cheap, too cheap, but it depends on what you can afford and how often you will be using it. Remember, you get what you pay for.

My recommendation is to go to a local Nextel dealer and look at one and have them let you make a call on the i30sx and see if you like it (Try out their other phones too). Also, check out their coverage map for your area and see if it is going to be what you need.

Ultimately cell phones are like computer, most of the time you don't know what you would do without them, but some days you would like to see how many pieces you could smash it into.

(PS - get the phone warranty coverage in case your phone decides to throw itself up against a wall ;) )

When my phone goes kaput--I see it as a sign to move on to newer and better (and more expensive).

Sounds like a convincing "AYE!" for Nextel. My AT&T plan expires this month, then it's on to Nextel . . . I'll go to the local Nextel dealer as HRJ77 suggested, then order it off the website to get the discounts (unless the BM store decides to match the website). As for the 5000 bonus FF miles--I remember seeing somewhere that each mile is worth about 1.5 cents, so 5000=$75, not too shabby.

lol..but why give up an i1000 plus for a i30sx? Only have 3 grumps (no..love my i1000plus..:)) against Nextel..price,service(N. GA mountains..no signal unless you on top of a mountain..;) ) and ...not having met Amy (my Nextel rep..:D )

This may be hard to believe, but it's true. AT&T uses Nextel for their service people. Apparantly, AT&T does not have good enough quality for AT&T workers. Pretty weird, huh?

I agree whole heartetly !!! I canceled my home phone too.... THe wireless web is the best I have tried (att too limiited -- Sprint too expensive) I signed up for it when they first launched it so I got INTERNET+ Their internet plus service which allows me to bookmark my pages for instant access turbodial on keys 1-9 .... I have keys 1-3 for Bargain sites (great for snagging deals after work!) Keys 4-6 For sports and movies listings and 7-9 for Yellowpages and a few game sites. I don't know if I am a heavy user, but in my Data TX/RX timer I average 4500 kbs a month.....

GREAT Web service -- Rock solid!! I use the yellow pages feature all the time (provides address with step by step directions and one button call feature.)

Too bad I can't get andandtech to format properly.:D:disgust:

Anyone try this thing out as a modem yet?

Like all wireless services YMMV with location and what your specific needs are .

Pros- Direct Connect Feature , Unlimited internet for flat rate (no airtime charges for browsing web)

Cons- basic airtime prices are a little higher than msot of the other privers , no off-system roaming capability , customer service is not so good

I just got this deal with Nextel with the i1000 phone. I did it through the SWA promotion and got 5 SWA points. There was a several day screw-up because the rep who took my order put the wrong area code and the phone came not programmed.

To make a long story short, I got a $20 credit because of the screw up. I was still so pissed so I called up to cancel it and send the phone back. I had ordered the $54.95 500 minute plan which includes 2500 n/w and 2500 DC minutes. When I called the number to cancel and was transferred into the customer retainment department, they offered me 200 anytime additional minutes a month for 12 months if I stayed. So I decided that was OK for all the trouble I went through.

I am not sure but maybe if you called to cancel your account... Maybe they would offer the additional time to others. It sounded pretty canned to me.

um... thats not really wierd at all. AT&T does not have any wireless ability, that is the other company, AT&T Wireless. They are two totally seperate entities, so one does not owe any loyalty to the other. I bet the AT&T Wireless offices use MCI for the landline service :)
