Next version of windows called 7 ?

http://news.com.com/Next+versi...7943.html?tag=nefd.top

Like Vista, Windows 7 will ship in consumer and business versions, and in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The company also confirmed that it is considering a subscription model to complement Windows, but did not provide specifics or a time frame.

I hope they aren't planning to do a system where most of the os is on there servers and you use a hispeed connection to interact with it.
It was rumored that they were looking at something like that in the future when broadband catches up.

Probably going to be a yearly license deal like alot of high end software makers use.

Still the name 7, hrm 7 of 9 ?

Vista is version 6, Vienna will most likely have a major OS version code of 7. The product name, however, won't be Windows 7.

I can't believe they are still shipping a 32-bit OS. Does anyone really think that there will be any 32-bit machines capable of running the next version of Windows? I mean already we have an OS where the included solitaire games required 3D acceleration with no option to run without, so what are they going to have in the next version that is flashy for no good reason?

I hear ya...

I just want an OS that will manage the system and do it well.

I agree. This just gives hardware manufacturers more excuses not to release 64-bit drivers.

Drivers are there, but not the apps.

there's 64 bit driver for msot of common hardware, but :
-office is still 32-bit
-devel. tools (eclipse, visual studio, netbeans, etc.) are still 32 bit
-and of course most of games.

Not really. Try most audio recording hardware, specially from Line 6. No drivers whatsoever (not even beta, unsigned drivers), and by the look of things, there won't be any drivers at all, leaving tons of expensive hardware orphaned.

Check out this list of hardware with supported Vista 64 drivers. Not even 50% of the devices listed have 64-bit drivers, and probably never will.

About all you can do is write complaint letters and vote with your wallet. It's been five years and I STILL won't buy or recommend HP printers/scanners because they orphaned so many when XP came out. Symantec's pathetic response to the release of XP also caused me to stop buying/recommending Symantec software.

I'm CONVINCED that hardware and software makers don't start their development work for a new OS until a month AFTER the OS is released for sale by Microsoft.

It's pretty obvious that's the case.

And it's annoying as hell, especially when MS gives them months in advance to work on their sh!t too.

Also, seriously, in three years, that means they're still gonna be sucking along w/ machines w/ 3 GB or lower of RAM.

IOW, the 32-bit versions will basically be the ultra low end crap for people who can't afford a real OS or PC, since in 3 yrs. i'd expect 4 GB+ to be standard in PCs.

If you want to see the version number of your Windows release, just run "winver".
For reference:
Windows NT, obvious since they still had version numbers in their names 😉
Win2K -> Windows 5.0
WinXp -> Windows 5.1
Vista -> Windows 6.0

Why? Most people couldn't give a rats ass whether their OS is 64 or 32 bits. The amount of 64-bit software for Windows is extremely low, the fact that 32-bit Windows clients can access memory addresses >4G could be easily fixed by MS if they wanted and besides niche apps like A/V stuff and games no apps are even close to hitting the 2G VM limit on 32-bit Windows.

Check out this list of hardware with supported Vista 64 drivers. Not even 50% of the devices listed have 64-bit drivers, and probably never will.

Welcome to the wonderful world of commercial software where the bottom line is more important than customer happiness.

Tell that to nforce3 users, we only have early betas that suck (for XP 64) and we have alpha drivers that suck even more (for vista 64)

I am noforce 3 user... nvidia screwed us as hard as it gets. But hey, I won't ever buy any of their chipsets. Intel mobo + intel chipset = win.

Amen brother!

I know that I will never buy another chipset from them, I am also considering never buying their GPUs after this (I built 4 systems powered by nvidia chipsets and GPUs for family members and then nvidia did this to us).

Even my notebook has a geforce in it 🙁

They have lost a loyal fan, I have been exclusive nvidia since the fall of 3dfx.

Overall we encourage you to post about other operating system choices however please try to stay on topic within the existing threads.
