Next version of Windows 64bit only

The next version of Windows is going to be for 64bit capable processors only so it would be a good idea to go for 64bit version of Vista (if your hardware supports it thats is) so that it will be easier to migrate to Windows Vienna in future.

MS is already working on new technologies like WinFS Windows Future Storage - it is supposed to be a new File system thats works like existing windows Registry Database, so basically you cannot recover files when you delete it. But WinFS is seems to be extremely fast and secure,though none of these features are finalized yet. They didn't include WinFS in vista because they thought the current hardware might not be able to cope with it.

Other features include a new version of Windows Explorer, improved support for Virtualization technologies, a Pie menu (i guess its a start menu replacement) and more.

Will ship in 2011.

This dovetails with what Microsoft told us officially from the platform at a TechEvent I attended this week. The dearth of 64 bit applications today is only because we consumers have not demanded them by upgrading to 64 bit systems. Sort of a chicken and egg thing.

Bottom line, we were all advised to seriously consider upgrading to 64-bit capable hardware and moving to a 64-bit OS in the near to mid-term. It is the future road map.
 
MS has been promising WinFS (with different names) since what? 1992 or so? You can hold your breath for it if you like, but all I predict is a blue face.

well, officially 😛 they announced WinFS 4 years back at PDC. If feels like a bit of SQL server DB to me, the only problem is if a virus infects the db the entire db is gone. Also this type of architechture need a dedicated processing thread. Files will be stored along with meta data and you will get a programmatic ADO.NET interface through which you can access WinFS db layer. Desktop search and loading times will be much faster but it has its weakness like all other things.
 
heh your Win7 link says "It will also likely include the WinFS (Windows Future Storage) technologies". They've tried to release it like 3 times before and failed, what makes you think the 4th try will be the charm?
