Right now I've got a pair of iq3s connected to my Onkyo TX-SR605.

I think I'm going to get my center channel next (live in an apartment, have a roommate = not in a rush to buy a nice subwoofer.)

I'm drawn to the KEF iq6c - are there others that would work/match?

Next step after that would be a subwoofer - eyeing the Kef PSW2500 - how important is matching brand on the sub?

After that, I figure I can either pick up the iq9s and move the iq3s to the back. Or, I can pick up the iq1s and use them for the rear. (picking up the iq1s would still leave the possibility of buying the iq9s and going to a 7.1 setup).

I guess if anyone has any suggestions/criticisms, I'd appreciate them. Of course, I'm curious to answer the bolded questions.

The iq6c would work, as would a single iq3s.
Matching the sub isn't important at all, as long as your frequency range is covered.

seems that deals on the iq6c in black are quite rare.

How risky would it be to buy maple and sand-paint it?

Would the iq2c be underwhelming with my iq3s (or if I went all out with iq9s in the front?)
