Next step when system restore fails?

I am working on a PC for someone where they are having odd errors in Windows. I started with a SFC /scannow and it came up with errors it was not able to fix. I tried using a windows 7 disc, running a repair and doing a system restore, but it fails on the system restore.

Do I have any options other than a clean install of windows? I would like to avoid that if at all possible...

Thank you for any advice you might be able to share.

its rare that i ever had system restore work correctly on a messed up pc. What version of windows is it?

you did all the right things
There always the option of mucking around in the event viewer, and or doing a mini-dump
I guess you are aware certain activation hacks can do this (cough!!)
in any case I would next download extract and run the Kas live AV that does not install to system, but you gotta hang around and say clean on the red/yellow windows

(Its updated every hour)
then you can download and boot to Hirens V13 for a bunch of diagnostic tools (google)

Unfortunately, it seems like a clean install would be the option to go with. If there's a way for you to backup your data, give it a go, but you want to rule out hardware issues in doing this.
