I thinking of building a new pc but I cant really make my mind up which cpu to go for as under the cpu benchmarks comparisons this phenom 9850 does not come out to bad vs others in the 100-150 euro price range.

Now I have a asus m2n sli de luxe, amd phenom 9850, 4GB ddr2 ram, asus gtx 550 ti and windows 7 64. I did swap the graphic card last week from a asus 9800 gt to the asus gtx 550 ti and from xp 32 to windows 7 64 and it runs a lot smoother.
My girlfriend confiscated it to play sims mediaval on it so I have to build another not too expencive but just a bit better one for me.

Any sugestions on which cpu I have to look for? A set what I can upgrade slowly over the years again like this last one. ( started with a amd2 64 3200+ and 7900 gt )

You need a whole new PC, right?

I'd honestly go 2500k/Z68.

If you have to go with an i3 right now for price reasons you'll still get much better gaming performance over your 9850 today, you'll likely lose a step on media encoding but it wouldn't be too horrible.

Next year, or 2013, you'd be able to go with Ivy Bridge, the next revision of the current Intel chips which is similar to what you did with your current AMD rig.

The AMD platform side is super cloudy right now - FM1 might be a dead end (aka S754, fine if you buy and move on, not so much if you keep upgrading), AM3+ doesn't look to be getting super-competitive CPUs, FM2 might come out next year, etc. This looks to be one of the rare times that Intel is offering a platform with a chipset life-cycle that is really competitive with what AMD typically offers.

On the video card side, I suppose you could post in the video card forum ;)

Hehe, I though I'm the only person in the world still using a P I 9850 on a Asus M2N-SLi Deluxe (with 4 GB DDR2 RAM). :D Only I have a XFX 5870

I'll be "upgrading" to a FX 8150 (maybe next stepping, it it's out by then)on a Asus Sabertooh 990FX, 16 GB RAM and another 5870 on a few months, probably.

Though I'm surprised how well my 9850 holds on. I can play pretty much anything on max details and wouldn't be upgrading if my GF wouldn't need a PC for WoW and SWTOR.

The Phenom II's are great value for money now, you can't go wrong with them.

I am been looking at the the amd phenom II x 4 850 3.3Ghz am3 with a ASUS M4A77TD AM3 DDR3 and 8 gb ddr3 1333 ram and a gtx550 ti graphic but not sure about what is said above about the growing possibilities with this amd path now. It does seem that now its a good moment to go fo the new intels.
The i3 or lower i5 do seem to be running fine but I have to see how the prices are as here ( in spain ) they are a bit more expensive then I see around here.

I'm posting with a Phenom 9850 right now, but I'm on a Gigabyte board, and this is no longer my main PC.

You either want a Phenom II X4 with an AM3+ motherboard for future upgrades(Bulldozer/Piledriver), or go with an I3 from Intel. For once Intel probably has the better upgrade path, no doubt the better gaming processors right now.

You need a CPU and MOBO upgrade as the gurus said. Go with a 2500 non K version and a P867 ASUS motherboard, and your set. You can continue to use your ram... however to prevent bottleneck, spend 100 bucks and buy a nice 1600Mhz 8GB kit... hehe gl

you can upgrade up to a phenom2x4 945 according to the asus website. Not a bad upgrade while still keeping your existing mobo and memory.

Either AMD or Intel would be fine. DDR3 is so good to switch to, because RAM is so cheap.

If you are looking for a good step-up, I would say either a x6 or 2500k. If you can afford it, a 2600k would be very nice as well.

I am still reading a lot and checking reviews about the different motherboards and cpu possibilities which I can start with for not too much money and then grow on it with upgrades.

The i5 sounds great but is still expensive but maybe for upgrade in a while when they getting cheaper.

I thought of a Asus P8P67 LE motherboard ( 95 euro )
A cheap Intel G620 ( 64 euros )
kit of 2 x 8 Gb 1600 ram ( 55 euros )
Another Asus gtx550 ti ( 122 euros )
Power supply 600/650w ( 60 euros )
Case (45 euros )
HD and dvd burner ( 100 euros )
Total of 541 euros.

This is already slightly better then what I am running now and I can grow on the cpu and use the other asus gtx550 ti ( sli ) and stick the old 9800gt back in the amd 9850 set.

Does this make sense or is my hangover causing me weird thoughts :p

Yes looks like it but thats only a 30-40 euros more and for a new base its a small difference to grow from I think.
