Continuation of this

I just finished my winter quarter, and told my parents I would be going to the movies, which they didn't want me to because coming home at 10:00 PM is too late. So I called them back, and told them I'm spending the night at a friends... The next day:

- Voicemail threatening a missing persons report and stolen vehicle report
- Parents told me they'll disconnect me from phone, take me off car insurance, and not pay my spring quarter tuition (which they originally agreed to pay)
- They want the car back
- Mom decided to take the incentive to change the password to our home security system.

They can't file for a missing persons report because... I'm not missing. They can't file for a stolen vehicle report until after they take me off the insurance.
So now, I can't go back to college (just got accepted into the EE department), cell phone less, and now staying at friends' houses. I have no loans yet, and my financial aid needs to be changed but doesn't start until the 2009-2010 school year. They also called me and said "Good luck, I love you." So I guess all this for wanting some freedom over break huh?...




SO... where are the best places to get jobs? Any other tips?

This is what your counselor at school hould be earning their pay doing, helping you on this.
My best advice from College Life Drama is this.... a food service job allows one to eat without spending one's meager cash.

Read the other thread, not to be mean but your parents kind of fail at being Asian. My in-laws aren't the opposite, but my mother-in-law would NEVER kick out my brother-in-law. He's like her little baby, even though he's 25 (soon 26) and has a job, has graduated college, has his own car (he pays), all that. She would do absolutely anything to keep him home, but at the same time complains he spends too much time on the computer, and not enough with his friends. My wife's family is all from Hong Kong and mainland China, being around them all the time the last few years I haven't seen anything like what you're describing, that just seems like a bit of insanity.

Seriously though, if you have no money, and no job, then you're kind of screwed. I'm betting your paperwork (passport, birth cert., SSN card) is at your parents', and somehow I don't think they'll just give it up. Without such things getting a job will be hard. Also, are you good enough friends with these people to crash at their places for the few months it'd take to get together cash for a place of your own?

Might just need to suck it up and go home, beg for forgiveness, and quietly plan and scheme to escape.

Well, there are payment plans so you don't have to drop out. As for work, well, that's tough. There's always retail, but don't expect much.

This seems a bit harsh even for my standards. I suspect this is not the whole story.

OK, just skimmed the "Rest of the Story,' or as much as we actually are told. (I still suspect there's more to it than just your side.)

Yeah, you're pretty much fucked...either go kiss your parents' asses and ask forgiveness...and promise to be a better son...:roll: or pack your shit

and leave. Go find a McJob to get you by...probably with roommates...start applying for financial aid, grants, and scholarships.

I'm not Asian nor have I ever played one on TV...so I have no advice on how to deal with your parents.

As an old hard-ass parent, I tend not to have much sympathy for your plight...all you gotta do is live by their rules and it sounds like you get pretty much what you want/need...BUT, I still think this is a bit harsh...there's gotta be more to it.
I am however, one of the "My way or the Highway" kind of people...so in a way, I understand your parents attitude...sort of.

Have to write this over again but...

Step 1. Go home, grab your things and papers and move in with friend.

Step 2. Go back to college, see the financial office. Work out financial aid for next year. Inquire about any scholarships or grants because some you will automatically be applied for others you need to do yourself. Ask about getting around your parents. When I did the FAFSA, I had to have my parents submit their 1040's regardless of whether I was a dependent or not. My school still factored in a contribution from my parents even though I wasn't a dependent and this wasn't waived until I turned 25 or became a grad student.

Step 3. Realize that you aren't going to school this spring unless your parents cough up the money. Apply for a leave of absence so that you can come back in the fall under financial aid without any repurcussions.

Step 4. Apply to every job you can find and sling hash until the fall and then get a part time job. Don't forget to look for a campus job in the cafeteria or computer centers.

Step 5. Buy a beater car and get insured. Also apply for student health insurance and use the school health facilities when necessary.

And that's it.

OR:

Join the military. You might want to look into the Air Force or the Navy because they are usually more interested in EE people. Not saying that you can guarantee this or anything, but in my research group we have had Navy and Air Force personnel get their master's and doctorates with us while still being in the service. The Air Force has a technical institute and does a lot of research into radar and the such. You might want to try ROTC to guarantee you get our bachelor's.

EDIT: Personally I would do the military as a last resort unless it really appeals to you. I pretty much got myself through college with only a few thousand from my folks, but they did give me a car (that's what all the college money was spent on, after that I was pretty much on my own).

all this is good advice. I would just apologize and hope for forgiveness even though you didn't do anything wrong because Born2bwire's advice is A LOT more work than a few minutes of apologizing.

If you can prove you are off of your parents taxes, it takes one year to be independent. Basically, the next time you can file a tax return yourself and your parent does not claim you - the school financial aide office should be able to list you as an independent student.

I had to do that because of a less than amiable situation with my parents at the time.
