How soon will a faster speed for DVD writing come out now that the 8x writers are more common? I want to know if I should wait for a faster speed or buy an 8x.

8x media won't even be available till next year. Buy now, don't worry about waiting for something faster. DVD writers won't get much faster than they are right now. I remember reading somewhere that about 12x was going to be the max.

Are you sure 8x media is unavailable? I see it on eBay...
You probably believe that your car will go as fast as the max speedometer reading too.Are you sure 8x media is unavailable? I see it on eBay...
At about 16x, a dvd has the same rotational speed as a 52x cd. But DVDs have higher mechanical strength than CD's which should allow them to go somewhat faster. Also, since DVD's have concentric tracks and not a helical track, they should be much more amenable to multi beam technology than CD's are.Anyone know the rotational speed of a DVD at the outer edges of the disc (assuming its CLV)? Since CDs are physically maxed at 52x, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out the max for DVDs.

Ive got a DVDR roundup coming out in a day or two.
DVDRs could probably level out at 16X but since we start to hit the limit on the IDE bus i dont think it will go much higher than 12X for a while. DVDR-9 will probably take priority for development after 12X DVDR anyway. After that is BlueRay or whatever slim wavelength technology comes along DVDR will probably change quite a bit.
8X media is not unavailable. All the burners that burn at 8X do it on 4X media anyway, as you will see in the roundup this week.
