When are the lower frequencies Penryns due for ?

Right now the only one available is the extreme version right ? So the 2.4, 2.6, 2.8Ghz ones are for January or February ? I'm asking because today my local store received my Gigabyte X38-DQ6, and I'll go pick it up tomorrow, and I was just wondering which date(s) I'd have to put an X onto my calendar, that's what happens when you're deprived of patience.

Yes, affordability often lags behind availability for items that are high in demand.

Companies across the size spectrum will attempt to capture their R&D expenses as quickly as possible through their pricing schedule. As competition enters the market with technological improvement, they'll be forced to moderate prices, just as their costs of production will decrease through new efficiencies for the same product.

The problem here is that we have two dominant firms, and one of them currently dominates. Oh, I suppose you could throw Sun Microsystems, Apple and IBM into the mix, but we're really looking at AMD and Intel. And AMD is bleeding at the moment.

That's why it really bothers me that Intel didn't go out of their way to support the nVidia 680i for Penryn (quad) -- although many blame nVidia. But Intel was the chip designer, and they knew damn well that the Kentsfield worked fine with 680i. So I suspect there was a little deliberation in their design choices. The fact that Wolfdale works with 680i indicates that they didn't HAVE to leave the nVidia 680i hanging in the wind.

We'll just have to wait and see. Of course it serves Intel interests if nVidia takes a hard fall per their customer base. Obviiously, as you see in these forums and as we've seen for months -- a migration is under way toward the Intel chipsets.
