Next generation VW Passat (2005)

Gah! Color match the grille (you too Nissan!!!) and I'll be happy. Oh, and the taillights immediately made me think

"Corolla".

Looks bigger than the current Passat.

Probably is. Pretty much every car in the midsize market jumped up half a notch in side with their latest restylings.

With the current trend of bigger, more expensive cars, soon Corollas will be selling for 30k!!

It's amazing the difference and engine makes. Look at the Passat V6 vs the 1.8t and the Saturn LS300 4cyl vs 6cyl.

VW had concepts with that rear since early 90s. And how is that a RSX similar front? 😕

There seems to be a group of ATOTers who have taken it as a hobby to point out what other cars they think new cars resemble.

AHAHAHAHA

Alright but seriously, many cars have moderate to serious problems first year of a new generation. Think what this means for a VW. :Q

Typically I'm a CR defender, because I like the magazine, but this rating points out a problem with their rankings. The only reason the 1.8T Passat rates so low is because of the coilpack fiasco. Those things were failing like crazy on brand new models starting in ~2002, and the problem was very widespread. But here's the thing: the fix is a 5 minute job, free under recall, and once it's fixed it is no longer a problem. The Passat is by no means an unreliable car, but this one widespread, albeit minor, problem gives VW a black eye.

The Passat 1.8T does not deserve to be that low on the scale, but maybe an unrealisticly low reliability rating is what VW needs to get on top of things.
