Yeah, they're all over the Video forums.

R580 - January 26th 2006.
G71 - Last week of January/Early February.

Too bad it's only stINQ's speculation.

Real next gen cards are G80 and R600,Nvidia's G80 will be released around next June.
I'm not sure about ATI's R600 release date .

Yep, the current cards out (R580, G71) are more along the lines of a modded refresh. At least from current definition. The real next generation of cards will be the G80 and R600. The R580 is suppose to be out in late January and is suppose to be hard launched and not paper launched since ATI can't afford another paper launch. The G71 is suppose to be launched in Late Febuary or even early Febuary depending on availability.

I wouldn't worry too much about the G80 and R600 though since they won't be out till end of Q3 or early Q1. They're mainly about getting DX10 compliant. DX10 won't become relevant for at least another two years aside from tech demos and the like.

Even if you didn't want to look for yourself, can you imagine a UT2007 game with max settings and visually stunning cinematic gameplay at extreme resolutions with 100 fps?

I remember when the Geforce 4 Ti 4600 used to cost over $300. Now it's 50 bucks and can barely run Quake 4.

Actually the G80 and R600 are supposed to be 32 pipeline monoliths. Their unified design will significantly boost performance, because they can dynamically allocate more vertex shaders or pixel shaders, depending on what the game needs. Also, they are supposedly coming out close to July, more or less (hopefully more than less).

I would suggest getting an R580 if you need to upgrade now. Otherwise just wait. But certainly don't buy a videocard for a month or so.

That should read Q3 or Q4 and not Q1 in my original post.

I do agree with what you say but for the overwhelming majority of games, this will not matter because until at least one year after Vista's release, there won't be anything to use DX10 games with besides tech demos and perhaps benchmarks.

The speculation is that they will come out in July but at this point, no one knows. I'd say late Q3. After all, DX10 is only suppose to be on Vista and that won't be out till late Q3.

It's also debatable just exactly how well the R600 and G80 will perform for DX9 and below games. Probably only a modest boost only and that the R600 and G80 won't really show their stuff except with Vista. And development takes usually 3 years for a quality game. That means at the earliest late 2007 and likely not till 2008.

Therefore, don't bother waiting for the R600 and G80 if it's time for your normal upgrade cycle when the R580 and G71 comes out.

I would have to disagree on this one...there WILL be stuff to do with a DX10 GFX card.

^^ from there:
Allchin began his talk by demonstrating a machine running the game "Reversi" running in Windows 1.0. He then showed off some Windows Vista-based graphics from game company Crytek. Crytek is planning a new game to debut simultaneously with Vista
They must be talking about that DX10 game...

I'd wait until I'd buy a GFX card right now... (the next one I'll buy will probably be a DX10 card, since I already have a GF6600GT, which I bought a long time ago..)
