Next generation CPU to upgarde ?

Hi,

I currently have an intel QX6850 (quad core) running at 3GHz & MOBO Asus Striker Extreme.

Due to the heat generated, I'm staying away from overclocking.

Currently wondering when I should plan on my next CPU/MOBO upgrade.

My understanding is that Gulftown may be around the corner... Really not sure if this the generation for me to upgrade to...

Any thoughts or suggestions ?

Nothing is wrong right now... PC is running fine... just that I feel the urge to upgrade due to following reason...

I don't OC cpu due to noise generated from my CPU cooler (Freezone Elite from CoolIT). It is horrendous the amount of noise it generates and I don't want to replace it cause of the $ I spent. Replacing CPU & MOBO, means I have no choice in replacing CPU cooler with one that I expect to be silent.

Also SATA 3 & USB 3 coming out as well... (I don't expect to use USB 3.0 but there is a good possiblity for SATA 3).

When I purchased my PC it came with an extremely silent CPU water cooler (Hydro Series H50 CPU / Asetek LCLC 120 Liquid Cooling System). At the time I was interested in OC'ing my CPU and it wasn't doing that good of a job so I replaced it... unfortunately when I purchased Freezone Elite, they wanted my old CPU cooler to get a discount... so I don't have it anymore. Yes... I'm actually tired of this noise so any thoughts on this cooler or any silent cooler... ?

I'm thinking that It's possible for me to experiment in OC'ing my CPU maybe 10% to 3.33GHz so I want something silent that I can do some slight OC'ing without generating too much heat.

Agreeing with the above suggestions, it sounds like the cooler is your problem and not the hardware. There's plenty of fantastic options on the market, depending on your budget. If you want something great but low cost, a Xigmatek 1283 is a great choice. If you want top of the line, look at the Prolimatech Megahalems or the Thermalright Venomous X. Silence is also going to depend on what fan you use with the heatsink. Most fans are quiet when controlled properly, and for heatsinks that don't come with fans, you can choose whatever fan you want. I recommend 120x38mm fans for these heatsinks, because the wider fan creates a larger pressure and produces more airflow with lower speeds. Also, for a cooler engineered around silence, anything from Noctua is a guaranteed ace in the hole. Finally, make sure you control the fan either via PWM or set up automatic control manually via program like SpeedFan.

I don't understand how OCing your CPU has anything to do with your noisy CPU cooler. Does the CPU get very hot and and the fan speed ramp up automatically?

Yes, the fan speed ramps up automatically when CPU gets hot... Not only that but PC being idle... fan noise is just unacceptable.

Yes, I believe this is what is driving me to want to upgrade... I will start checking out CPU coolers. Thanks for your suggestions.
