Next generation broadband (Fiber)

I know Verizon is pumping a lot of money into Fiber but whats AT&T up to? I haven't heard anything about their Lightspeed (Tv only right? and FTTN?) service. I would like to see FIOS at my home but the phone lines are SBC/ AT&T so it's unlikely Verizon will invest in FIOS in my area.

Anyone have any idea what the current status is?

Comcast put in all fiber optic lines in my 'hood two years ago. That is why we enjoy good, high speed cable Internet. My last test result:

I got fiberoptic cables layed down too by Cablevision (Optimum Online). However I CAN'T WAIT TO DITCH CABLEVISION FOR VERIZON. I HATE THEM!!!!!!!

Anyway I do enjoy 15mb/s down and 2mb/s up. The thing I REALLY HATE is the fact that they'll cap you for uploading too much. I've been capped just for gaming. They say "the uploading is a stress to our severs, etc. etc......."

Then maby they should upgrade there dam severs with the $60 a month they get paid per person. :|

All good points, wizboy - but a lot depends on where you live. Here in Tucson we have two Internet cable providers - Cox and Comcast, Which one you get depends on where you live. They have assigned geographic areas, and do not share their infrastructure. Wireless EVDO mobile broadband is here - but it is down in the 400-500 kbps range on a good day with 4 bars. Still a lot better than dialup.

We will never see Verizon fiber. The politics of allocating areas won't allow it. Wireless would be the only way aside from an acquisition of Cox or Comcast by Verizon. 🙂

I think we need more competition in the broad band arena. In my area, the most I can get is ADSL or Comcast cable. Comcast has trouble with the uptime (~60% earlier this summer and that is optimistic). The price is also stagnant, Michigan needs some competition in this area.

Yeah - more competition is essential. But it is limited.

Due to expensive infrastructure problems, the only real competition will be wireless. But, if local counties and cities would own the infrastructure and then award operation by bid, it could be more competitive. But under the current geographic allocation and infrastrucure ownership, it really can't be competitive.

Who ever invests in the cabling rules. Go wireless!
