Next Gen Video Cards?? When Do They Come Out?

When are the next generation of video cards expected to come out? Debating on if I should go ahead and buy me a 8800gtx, or wait for the next gens?

In the matter of fact, G80 is the next generation of video cards...

Last November. The 8800GTX is next gen. Otherwise wait another 18 months or so for the gen after that.

An 8800GTX is "next-gen"... ATI's just been slow pulling out their equivalent...

Have you seen all the no 8-series drivers for Vista threads...? That's how currently available hardware can be "next-gen".

The 9 series is what was used to test Dx 10. Who cares if they havent released a public driver yet. It is tiring to hear all of the BS. What card do you think they used to test DX10 features?

^ He has. nitromullet meant that the hardware can be released, but still be next-gen, because no drivers are out for the Windows Vista Betas/RCs. Or real Windows Vista.

Because Direct X 10 games and drivers haven't been released yet.

Direct 3D 10, as it is properly called, is not fully exploitable and has not been released to the general public (as we are awaiting both the consumer release of vista and the production of real D3D10 games, using new D3D10 hardware such as the 8800 series).

The 8800GTS and GTX are considered next-gen because we have not begun the transition to D3D10 yet. The R600 is next-gen not because it is just unreleased, but because like the 8800s it uses completely new and revolutionary architecture. DX9 cards that are to be released next month would not be called "next-generation" just because they aren't for sale yet.

Yup... from the article it sounds like we won't be seeing any availability of an R6x0 based board till sometime in March.

I was reading the next ATI R600 cards can use 250 watts and need "super coolers." Things are out-of-hand.

The current generation of video cards (R600, G80's) focuses on a single large GPU. I think the manufacturers will be moving to multi-core GPUs, that will probably be the next big thing for graphics technology. I think it's slated for R700 and maybe even G90, too. Though it's nothing much more than a rumor, it seems to be the logical direction to head in if they want to continue to improve performance. No one has a clue when this stuff will be available though, they don't even know when R600 will be out. But the future looks bright.
