What is coming next?? I saw a demo on the new Unreal engine, back in July. I wonder when that is coming... Q4 engine? Lithtech 3.0?

Tribes 2 should be released in the spring, but even though they have revamped their engine, I wouldn't call them an engine... Its just for Tribes 2, which I'm excited to see...

There'll be several games with stunning graphics next year - Tribes 2, Halo (next year?) and TF2 to name just a few. However I don't think either of the games' engines will be licensed to the degree of LithTech and Q3, so there won't be lots of other games based upon them.
On the other hand, probably there'll be lots of mods for all three games, and as proven with CS and other HL mods, they can reach the level of retail games easily.

I don't know much about the succesors to UT, Q3 and LithTech, but I have also seen shots of the UT2 engine, and of course it did look awesome.

wasn't doom gonna be built on the quake 3 engine? hmm, i don't know, that idea seems to be stuck in my head. i doubt a new rendition of the quake engine is going to be coming out anytime soon, the 1-1.5 year old engine is doing fine. And with the crappy ass performance of the lithtec 2.5 engine, i doubt our systems (as of now) could handle lithtec 3.0.

i wouldnt call doom3 a brand new engine. i recall reading on voodooextreme that the doom3 engine would be sharing some of the q3 technology...so its not exactly a built from scratch new engine.

John Carmack has stated it will be a completly new graphics engine, but utilizing some of the older code for things such as console, networking, etc. They are also assigning more programmer's to individual areas of the engine so they can get more attention and polish.

Graphics
It will have fully dynamic lighting, 3D Textures and Bump Mapping. Carmack has stated "one of the primary functions of our next-generation technology is trying to do everything with bump-mapping and dot products."

I'm hoping 3D engines start to take after what Croteam did with their Serious Engine -- the amount of enemies they put in a single level is unparalled! Not to mention the gorgeous and huge outdoor areas. You have to see it to believe it...seriously. ;)

Doom 3 and Unreal 2 will both sport brand new engines and will push the technology envelope even higher. I'm hoping that these games will come out next year. :)

Well, there was a rumor about Doom 3 showing up for the December 2001 CPL tournament. I don't know if it's true or not, but there have been confirmations stating that Angel Munoz, the president of CPL, has been having talks with John Carmack. Of course, I've read on other sites that the game will be out late 2002, which sounds more realistic. Carmack stated that he wanted a test release 6 months prior to the official release so if the game comes out in December 2001 then that only gives the production team 11-12 months to develop Doom 3 since the project was announced in June.
