Next gen $200 - $250 video cards, when?

I'm pondering a new video card purchase right now.... Has any news been made about a $200 - $250 next gen video card (either Ati or Nvidia)? If not, could anyone offer an educated guess?

I don't think either nV or ATI are planning on offering that level board out of the next gen. This could change, but it would not surprise me if that $ level is limited to last gen.

Of course they'll have cards in the $200 range - not everyone runs out with a wad of cash in hand and comes back hugging their shiny new 7800gtx. Both Ati and NV make a lot more sales in the $200-$250 price range. But they usually release their biggest and baddest cards first to get all the attention, and then release the midrange cards about a month later.

Nvidia will prolly just do a die shrink on the last generation cards. so the 6800 will become the new 7600 the 6600 will become the 7200. atleast thats what I would do if I was them.

also would be a good way for them to test the 90nm waters before they move the 7800 down to that for a refresh early next year

Either way, I hope they come out soon cause I don't feel like spending $350 on a PCIe 6800 GT.

Hmm, thanks everyone for your responses. I guess it boils down to... I feel pretty silly buying a new card right now when a next gen card / price drops could be right around the corner.

I'm in the same boat. I need to do a complete overhaul but my options are pretty much a 6600GT/x800 at $180 or pay almost twice that for an 6800GT/x800XL as the 6800 and the x800 pro seem to be bad price/performance near as I can tell, they run about 250-280 and don't give significant benefit over the 6600GT/x800.

ShmooDude, I'm pretty much in the same boat. I ended up buying an el cheapo X300 Hyper memory card off eBay to tide me over so I don't have to make the decision right now ($21 shipped, woot!).

Yeah if you're really looking in the $250 range, wait for the mid-level 7 series to come out. That should drop prices on the 6xxx cards, putting the 6800GT or Ultra in your price range. I've heard stuff about a 7800NU and a 7200, as well as a midrange ATI card, but that's just rumors at this point.

currently the best deal around the 200 dollar mark is the 6800NU can get it usually for about 190-200 and softmod it to get near GT performance.

Not a PCI-e card...

Dont expect a price drop too much before end september. Unless ATI brings something to the table nV can do whatver they want with prices, alias keeping them that high.
