I found this @ IXBT:

GeForce2 Pro: Slower GeForce2 Ultra? [10:37 am] Rat
The so long rumored info about the mysterious GeForce2 Pro chip from NVIDIA, which was first provided in the inf-files for NVIDIA drivers, has been finally confirmed, as to PCRave. It looks as if we were about to witness one more NVIDIA product announcement. What made us think so? Well, there appeared a pdf-file on NVIDIA?s official web-site, according to which GeForce2 Pro will be the same GeForce2 Ultra with the core working at 200MHz (like an ordinary GeForce2 GTS). However, the new chip will retain the main advantage of GeForce2 Ultra: its memory will work at 460MHz.
So, we can conclude that the ?enhanced? 0.18 micron technology used for GeForce2 Ultra chips manufacturing doesn?t provide high fit chips share. This is exactly the reason why NVIDIA, which turned out unable to satisfy the demand on its Ultra chips, had to offer graphics cards manufacturers an alternative solution. To tell the truth, the whole thing is very much similar to Intel announcing phantom CPUs with that only difference that NVIDIA doesn?t yet have any competitors.

This all makes no sense, Nvidia is going on a rampage, do we really need all these forms of the Geforce 2.

Bitch whine groan complain.....

Some of you guys are never happy. Hello? Nvidia releasing another chip isn't a bad thing! It's great that we have something between the GTS and Ultra now ... Maybe some of us will actually be able to afford the Pro.. and overclock it to Ultra speeds <Insert old winkey smiley here>

Since the main bottleneck on a gts is its memory and not its clock speed, shouldnt everyone just buy the geforce2 pro(assuming its memory will be clocked at 460mhz) instead of the ultra? :D

Well, i know why they are doing this! nVidia hand picks most of the Ultra's, and some chips dont make it to 250Mhz (or 230MHz DDR RAM).... so they mark them as a "Pro" instead...

It's just gradings, like with CPU's.

All CPU's are the same. The different speeds just come from which grade it was capable of running at.

(apart from some instances where they all go so fast there's a hole in the market, a la Duron so the clock them down to lower levels to fill the hole)

"<Insert old winkey smiley here>" no kidding..

yeah it looks like the typical high end computer will be using a Geforce 2 Pro instead. if it saves me $100 and I can still overclock it (Yay!) then yeah the GTS Pro looks ok.

however I don't have that kind of money, so <insert old face with tongue hanging out here>!

I just wish they would either resolve that dual monitor problem with the Geforce MX (which is one of the only reasons it probably won't be my next card), or reduce the price of the SDR and DDR.. that and I'm not so sure about the 2D quality of the cards.. ah well, yuo can't have it all!

Correct, it's called a core yield.

So six different versions from (how many... 7?) different vendors. LOL, maybe I'll just go hang out at the local Fry's to watch the face of the typical schmuck standing in the video card isle.
