next big mmo?

There is no next big MMO. If and when WoW dies off, the genre will be largely dormant for quite some time because nobody is investing serious cash in MMOs right now. Everyone finally got the message that it's throwing money down a pit.

As much as people complain about WoW, it provides what most MMO players want out of an MMO. If other games did it better, they'd be playing those games instead, but they're not. Every "WoW killer" has come and gone, meaning that if WoW dies it's most likely because people have lost interest in MMOs in general, and it'll require something truly new to get anyone's interest again.

Star Citizen? If they don't botch that game too badly, maybe.

Pretty much this. Knights of the Old Republic and Elder Scrolls Online were probably the last 2 "big" mmo's that came out, and both have gone free to play since. Doubtful we'll get another "big" mmo again any time soon.

Probably the next "big" one to release, will be Everquest Next, but I haven't been keeping up with it. Who knows when it will actually release, how good or bad the game will actually be, or how well it will actually do.

The upcoming game that gets the most mention is probably Black Desert. Honestly, I don't know much about that game, other than it's supposed to have one of the most in depth character designer/creator's ever. Considering where it's coming from, I'm guessing the primary focus of the game will be pvp. If thats correct, I'm doubting I'll be all that interested in it.

Personally, I'm most interested in Blade and Soul at the moment. The alpha just ended a week and a half ago, the first beta starts this weekend. It's a bit dated, but was quite fun to play in the alpha. I don't know if it will have any form of longevity, however. It might be one of those games I just play for a month or two, and then move on.

Fantasy MMO have more mass appeal to be "big". I doubt Star Citizen being a complex spacesim will ever be massive.

Lots of women for example, play online fantasy MMOs.

So whichever "next big MMO" will have to come from the Fantasy genre.

Honestly, unless Blizzard makes an MMORPG out of StarCraft or Diablo, or unless maybe BioWare makes one out of the Mass Effect universe, or unless Bethesda makes one out of Fallout... I can't see any MMORPGs that I would qualify as the "next big one" (I.E. big enough to actually compete successfully against World of WarCraft, which I don't think would ever be possible anytime soon, and perhaps never until WoW 2 comes out).

But as far as "others" go (not big, just the next ones on the horizon)...

There's the NA version of Blade & Soul in beta (every week end, or something along the lines), it will probably come out early next year (" Q1 2016 "). It's not a "big" MMO per se, and it's about two years late for a NA release (in my opinion, it should have competed against TERA when that one was still fresh-enough here). But it does look somewhat interesting (the combat mostly, it's dynamic, no tab-targetting), although I have my doubts as to how long it'll stay active.

What I would call certainly a notable MMO (and might become big over time) will be EverQuest Next, whenever it's completed, maybe in a decade from now (not sure if that's actually that much of an exaggeration, considering how ambitious they are with it). They've been working on it for what... 4 or 5 years by now (I mean they started before announcing it obviously, the announcement itself is more recent). Whenever it does come out I suppose it'll be one to keep an eye on.

And there's Black Desert, which supposedly hasn't been doing well in Korean recently. Time will tell how it 'survives' here. It does look very good, however, there's also the possibility to build your own house, and considering how complex the character creator is I can definitely see tons of devoted role-players being active on a regular basis. I would go as far as saying that they'd just ignore most of the game's content and just log-in for role-playing with others. But anyway, RP'ing or not, Desert Combat's dynamic combat system seems fun, but from the multiple videos I've seen (of the Korean version mostly) the PvE segment looks like a borefest.

That's about what I can think of right now (there's MANY more, especially in the F2P field but I won't bother listing them all, the F2P section on Steam is more than enough for that purpose).

Nothing in the foreseeable future. At least nothing at the same budget level as WoW/SWTOR/ESO.

The fact that Blizzard abandoned their next MMO project should tell you something. They would have been competing against themselves in a limited market. WoW is still enormously successful (despite currently being at about half its peak subscribers).

I think it'll be a decade before the next WoW happens. The genre needs to be reinvented, or at least needs a massive technology jump to get people on board again.

No 'big' MMOs coming out, but they would be trash if they were anyway I am sure.
In terms of potentially decent MMOs coming out, best place to look will be the Indie area, it will be one of those that manage to have a surprise breakout from niche into mainstream

Judging by job postings Blizzard appears to have an unannounced D3 project in development - since the next D3 expansion is already known to exist (although we don't know much about it otherwise) you could consider that already 'announced' and there is a little speculation that the next project could then be a D3 MMO. I don't think it's likely since D3 is practically an MMO as it is, but it's out there.

I'm not aware of any big next MMO. Most of the 'next big thing' MMOs have sputtered out fairly quickly and I think devs have finally learned from that. Everquest Next is technically still a thing I suppose but I wouldn't hold your breath.

I didn't know Blizzard had abandoned their next MMO project. It was Titan right? What happened?
They realized they don't have the creativity anymore that is required to make a world like they had in the original World of Warcraft.

Blizzard makes games now. Not fantasy worlds.
I'm sure Bobby is happy.

Seems like EQ Next will have major changes too. I read something a few months ago about the AI which was one of its big selling points isn't practical and they're dropping it, plus some of the world building. We're left with a cartoony WOW type game.

I hope that the whole MMO industry kills itself off. As popular as WoW has become it has in essence destroyed a whole genre and prevents new games being created as they all suffer from the "It's not WoW" syndrome.

Genres that die off tend to come back a while later and often in a different light. The SciFi/Space genre is coming back with multiple space trading/combat games as well as those more focused on fleet control. We've also seen an uptake in the Roguelike genres and dare I say Fighting games after their genres had a barren patch on our beloved PC's.

WoW is like that black hole that sucks in anything that goes near it's genre and tends to leave them squashed flat and dead.

GW2 HoT is pretty active again... with the new xpac..
boobies err blade and soul is coming out soon..
Black desert ETA is 2016....

How so? It's the players saying those other games are inferior. If they were better, those other games wouldn't die.

WoW doesn't prevent anything from being made, the player's lack of interest does.

I'm looking forward to Camelot Unchained and maybe EQ Next, the one thing i'm looking for is a return to the trinity, no more one class can do everything.

I'm surprised to see that it is not common knowledge as to Everquest Next's status.

The game isn't coming out. The studio was bought by a Russian company known for buying licenses and selling off assets. Apparently the majority of the staff has been axed and there is now just a shell team working on Everquest Landmark.

As someone who can listen to Everquest classic music and get chill bumps, or EQ2 music and instantly remember the sights, sounds, and smells of my younger years, this news was devastating once it sunk in.

Honestly if you want a great experience I recommend Project 1999. Its graphics won't compare well to anything remotely modern but its underlying D&D based mechanics and epic scale are pretty unbeatable in addition to it having a thriving and persisting community that LOVES to help out new players.

This guy is slightly annoying but he makes a great point. Its truly a strange thing going on with EQ:Next. Pretty much zero evidence of an actual game being made in the last TWO YEARS. People have to just suck it up and realize its not actually being made.

The next big MMO will be a VR MMO. For that to happen, lots of people will have to have a VR device, plus the multi-year development time for MMOs. So I'm guessing somewhere around 2019, beta signups in 2018 🙂.

I don't know how serious, or how tongue in cheek this post was, but sadly, I think it's probably true.

The next "big" mmo, one that has a crazy amount of subscribers, will probably be a vr mmo.

2019 is probably an ambitious start date for something like that. I'm thinking 2025 😀

By Bioware's own admission, SWTOR is basically an RPG now...

Which is what everyone wanted anyway: Knights of the Old Republic 3.

Had they just made that, it would have been an absolute blockbuster.
But having gone the MMO route, they quickly burnt out fans of MMOs looking for a "WoW killer" and never really satisfied true RPG fans looking for a next chapter in the KotOR series.
