Are they going to be releasing an Athlon XP 2000+, or is the 1900+ it for the XP line? Also if I buy one of the Athlons, I've heard I need to instill some type of cooling system myself, is this true? Thanks guys ;-)

Athlon XP+ will be around for a while, with the .18 micron die (Palomino) being used probably til around 2000+ to 2200+. I believe AMD is going to introduce Thoroughbred in Q2 of 2002, which is just the Palomino core on a .13 micron process. They'll ramp the speeds on the .13 micron process until the Hammer lines (totally new 64-bit architecture) are ready for desktop use, which probably won't be late 2002 to early 2003.

You don't need any "special" cooling system, just a heat sink and fan. Now, the price and cooling attributes of these heat sink/fan combos vary greatly, but thats a whole nother story. Check out the cases/cooling forum for some people's inputs.

Current Athlons will continue until about 1.8Ghz. I don't know for sure what that PR rating will be though. Then they will switch to the .13 micron Thoroughbred CPU and then to the Barton CPU, which will be .13 micron and be made with the SOI (silicon on insulator) process.

Heard the same as well...........seeing these chips now overclock close to 1800mhz so it seems AMD will push it there safely. Then have to switch to .13 die to get it over 2000mhz mark. I hate this PR rateing

Good question Evmonk. I had the same question since I am upgrading to an XP shortly. I hope the new chips come out so the prices will drop even further.
