One of our Linux Engineers found this company the other day and has been messing with their freeWare opensource vm image for storage. We are looking to replace OpenFiler.

It's pretty neat so far. The free ISO allows up to 1TB of storage, where as the free vmWare appliance version allows up to 6TB. It's built on OpenSolaris and has a very ubuntu'ish interface.

Some nice features include snapshots, data sync'ing (so you can replicate your storage to another node), nice control panel, etc.

My question is: Has anybody worked with this before? I'm also needing something to roll out for storage in production. Was looking at OpenFiler but this is starting to look better.

Haven't worked with it, but I was researching it out as well. The video demos on their website are pretty informative for the interface. ZFS is a nice feature.

Ultimately, I think our lab is going to go with a Dell Equalogic iSCSI system, but NexentaStor might have been the way I went if I had to build it myself. The vendor we bought our workstations from, PogoLinux, sells storage systems running NexentaStor.
