$2.50 a mo for 100KWHR, I can't remember what my last DTE bill said but i think their price is 8c / kwHR, which makes this a deal. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

Please note: There is a 2-block minimum purchase. Cost is in ADDITION to your current electric bill, and is paid monthly by credit card. 6 Blocks supports 100% wind power for the average home (600 kWh). Check your monthly usage to see how much it would take for you to support 100% NewWind Energy®.

For a typical New York State home that uses 600 kilowatt-hours per month, participating in LIPA's Green Choice program will add $7 to $15 per month to your electric bill, depending on which option you choose.
... you said deal ? I'm not understanding something...

Nope, you have it correct

It looks like a scam, however this extra 2.5 cents per KWH could be the "rent" the power companies pay owners of the land for placing the wind tower.

There was a thing on the history channel about wind power and this farmer up in NY stated they get a check each month from the power company for each Kilowatt generated by the towers.

EDIT:

After doing a little research on google. Wind engery is cheaper to generate than coal. The site is kind of miss leading about why your paying more. :|

from what I've gathered, you can save a ton of money going solar.. except all the money you pay for installing/setup makes it pointless. :D Please tell me times have changed...

not yet. heh. my main concern with solar (or any self renewable energy installation) is the fact what happens when you get weather damage... the cost of repairs will greatly outstrip it's monetary value. As of now, it's just a "hey look, I can afford to be green" I think.

Solar panels are still uber expensive. This is because of the pure silicon required to make the panels.

There are a few companies working on solar panel technology that do not require pure silicion and would make such panels much much cheaper.

Ah that's the part that I missed... unless that stuff is subsidized by the power company, why exactly are you paying it on top of your bill?

I think that extra fee is what the power companies pay the land owners for permission to use their land to place a wind tower. Scroll up a little bit and read my other post.

Also, solar panels currently only get about 10%-14% of the available energy from light. They are woefully in-efficient.

Yeah, people trying to buy happiness. :p

I'd pay an extra 2.5 cents per kilowatt for Wind power if I was gurantted to never have to suffer from a rolling black out. Let the cheap gas sucking SUV drivers suffer without A/C on a day where it's a 135 in the shade while I cool off in my Wind powered ice box. :D

After all they are not paying to use power generated by the wind

We've had high efficiency solar panels for a long time. Or rather, NASA's got them. They use gallium arsenide and are very expensive. Those 40.7% efficient cells look like prototypes, things you can only find in a lab. Good luck buying a panel made out of them, though it would be nice to see them go into mass production.
