Yes it's true. Anything to get elected I guess. So let's put those Floridians who are out of work because of the Space Shuttle program ending back to work. In the 'it couldn't get any weirder department' Newt Gingrich has promised that if he is elected president that we would have a moon colony by 2020.

It's funny, JFK announced an incredible goal of going to the moon when technology was a bicycle and duct tape; we did it.

President Bush 41 made a televised speech announced putting a man on Mars; didn't hear about it again.

President Bush 43 made a televised speech announcing putting a man on mars; didn't hear about it again.

I helped that in the first case we were in a competition with the Russians.

BTW, does everything have to be about partisan hackery with you? Bush 43 underfunded Project Constellation and appears to have never been serious about it, but Obama didn't do anything to improve it's chances when he took office either.

Well to be fair, President Obama did change NASAs direction but we never recieved the budget for it. You know because congress couldn't pass a new budget for two years......

Change their direction to what exactly?

Keep the manned Orion capsule, drop the Ares I rocket, redesign the big dumb booster Ares V. Aim for points outside of low Earth orbit such as Lagrange points and near Earth asteroids. Demonstrate advanced life support systems and in space refueling. Lastly keep flying the ISS and work with commercial space for resupply of the ISS.

We need a self supporting colony off-world. The human race is still in way too fragile a position. To accomplish this, we first need off-world colonies that are dependant on Earth as a stepping stone.
