Right now I'm on charter cable and I was wondering if all/most broadband isps have their own newsgroups? I don't feel like paying a monthly fee for something I might be able to get for free. If so, then how would I find out how to access the newsgroup?

Do you use newsgroups for text or binaries? If text's, then a quick google will get some good free text newsgroup servers. If binaries.... take a subscription with Newshosting or similar. I've used 3 ISPs newsgroups services, only Pipex where of any good, until the servers became overloaded by users...damn

Prior to signing up for Alltel DSL none of their customer service reps knew what usenet was so I assumed they did not provide the service but after signing up I found news.alltel.net worked fine.

You may want to try news.charter.net with your email name and password to access usenet.

Comcast here in PA does not have their own Usenet. They use Giganews, which is fine, but limited to 1GB of traffic per month. Since I don't do warez or pron, I don't care.

My ISP (Knology) uses SuperNews I think...unlimited monthly downloads (that I can see), and good speeds.

The problem is that most ISP's usenet access has poor retention. Not to mention they tend to be selective about which newsgroups they offer access to.

So if you're downloading an (ahem) rather large multipart binary chances are your ISP won't have all the headers.

If you subscribe to a Usenet service such as EasyNews, Supernews or Giganews you'll get all the headers that are out there.

It's WELL worth the $10 I pay a month. WELL worth it.

Thanks :)

Now how do I go on accessing it? The url leaves a blank page.

It's news.charter.net. You don't need to use your name/password.

To use it, use a news reader (Outlook Express will work, but it sucks horribly). Put news.charter.net as your server, then it should provide a list of groups.

Oh thanks! Does anyone know of a good free newsreader other than outlook? I did a quick search and most of them you have to pay for.
