Newsgroup like replies...

I was wondering about having newsgroup-like replies. You know, where you could reply to an individual message, and not the whole thread. It would help with organization and reading replies. I know its not Anandtech's issue, but rather a FuseTalk issue, but I want this idea to get spread around. It would be a great feature.

pterG, there are some who call me clairevoyant, and right now I am having a vision, someone in power (be it zuni or a mod) will be coming in to say "it won't be happening"

but seriously, I don't think it would help with organization at all, the way it is set up now does an excellent job IMO.

I absolutely hate that news group layout. It looks cluttered and messy. Most systems like that only show one post at a time which is a HUGE pain. Also, while it may be easy to skip to what may look like the important posts, you may miss several good ones in the process. It may be more difficult to moderate since you can't just skim down the page looking for bannable stuffs. 😉 I suppose it could cut down on bandwidth since whole threads wouldn't be transfered, but... Newsgroup laout = bad.

The newsgroup layout style works well with a newsreader in...newsgroups. But here, it would not be good, since you'd have to scroll all through a page to find new replies, instead of having them appear at the bottom of the thread.

<< Why? The current software already does this, no extra configuration needed! >>

I know that, thats why I said you can always change it to show most recent posts (in each thread) at the top. It does require some configuration, albeit a minimal amount.

You wouldnt have to scroll all the way through a page, you could have it post the most recent at the top of the thread. It would also be cool to introduce (along with the newsgroup style) a drop menu for the individual replies, just like in newsgroups. Therefore, the default could have all those individual replies hidden and then you would still see it as Anandtech has always been, but if you wanted to see/post an individual response, you still could.

I don't personally enjoy reading the newsgroup style of posts, lots of extra clicks to see what amounts to basically nothing. I'm comfortable following a thread in it's entirety. It makes referencing other posts extremely easy (i.e. you're not locked into replying to a single post) and it's a fairly well-established convention to quote any significat post that you wish to respond to.

Ok, the extra clicking and stuff, yes it can be tedious, but i just HATE when it is a really long thread and I just want to
respond to the first few posts. Quoting is so confusing too; I dont know where the original message was. I think they should be numbered,
but no newsgroup style. Maybe THAT would satisfy all.
