The latest word is that the refresh is due out by mid October and will be designated not by a "50" series (i.e. HD 2950XT) but by adding a Y between the X and the T - thus the HD 2900XYT, with the "XYT" pronounced "excite". AMD's Hector Ruiz is scheduled to announce the new branding in late June, assuming wafer production pans out at 65nm, and reviewers can anticipate receiving their evaluation hardware by early August. NDA expires at the time of launch, which at this time is known only to be sometime in October, according to our sources.

Reportedly the HD 2900XYT reference design is going to utilize a new three-slot cooler that incorporates vectored thrust technology demonstrated in recent aircraft designs such as the F-22 Raptor and the Sukhoi Su-37 Terminator. This feature provides an adjustable vane situated between the second and third slot areas of the cooler that can - via either automated or user controlled GUI input - direct the air the fan produces back and forth across the heatpipe/heatsink configuration to create a combination of enhanced airflow and acoustics.

The reference design also incorporates a new fan that borrows technology from the SilenX fan series, boasting a new high in cfm airflow at unbelievably low decibel levels. One testament to the effectiveness of the design is the following unverified report:

During design testing in a small form factor (SFF) case, an engineer mounted the fan to the bottom of the case, facing downward, and gave the fan full power. It began to generate enough lift to raise the case off the ground by almost two inches. Without thinking, power was immediately cut causing the case to slam down onto the test bench, in turn causing the hard disk's seek arm to shatter two platters, thus ending the test session.

In light of the power of their design, AMD is reportedly going to allow third party companies to produce add-on parts to enhance the visual impact of the product while providing support for those who plan to overclock their HD 2900XYTs and will most likely be spinning the fan up to max power. These add-ons will reportedly be marketed as the "Me" series, designed to create the co-branded "XYT-Me" package for manfacturers who want to offer a card-plus-addon combo.

While scouring the HIS website, our source reported seeing a document briefly posted but quickly removed. He was able to view it and inside was a list of their currently planned add-on parts for the HD 2900XYT, which include:

[*]A small spoiler or "wing" that the user can attach to the rear of the case behind the triple-slot card to create added downforce from the exhaust airflow, preventing a repeat of the engineering test accident.
[*]A packaged set of four dual-slot cover designs that can be snapped over the second and third slots where the cooling system exhausts air out of the rear of the case. Designed to create different sound effects when used with the vectored thrust system, they can also be combined for additional sounds, offering a total of 16 unique sound schemes.
[*]An AMD-branded neon green lighting kit for the see-through case fanatics.

That is all of the information we have at this time.

More details will be as they become available. And you're welcome!

My favorite part is when the "XYT-Me" turns the computer into a hovercraft.

Nice touch.

Let's do it AMD. Let's beat nVidia and....let's cat prices 50% on GPU's as it was on CPU's.

Y'know, the sad part is that this "info" was entirely believable.

Believable, and somewhat heartening that the XTXTXTXTTX was being shaken up with a simple Y and a clever way of saying it. Then the second paragraph and THRUST VECTORING had to ruin my hopes for something new in the naming scheme :(

The HD 2900XT will ship with Crysis II, World of Warcraft's 3rd expansion and Duke Nukem Forever. Although these games are not in existence yet, the card gets around it via a Flux Capacitor that installs the games once you hit 88 FPS.

You're welcome.

The rumors I heard:

Most gamers have a second love outside of gaming, and that love is pizza. The refresh part will come with its own pizza warming oven, capable of keeping pizza at a nice toasty 100C until consumed.

Analysts agree, this could be a hit with gamers over 300 pounds.

Even if you could time travel to get the 3rd WoW expansion, it would be useless because the server side software wouldn't exist yet. Though I suppose you could ebay it to some retarded Wow player and make a tidy profit while they get a paperweight.

And to tell which was really the fastest card, new benches would involve strapping the cards to skateboards and racing them down a stretch of road.
