Yes, the US govt did, but what you and other need to realize, is that purple hearts are nothing special.
Fine, then go find the first purple heart winner you can find and tell him to his face that his service wasn't as glorious as they make it out to be, and that purple hearts were given out too often. Make sure you get dental insurance first.

Fact is, true soldiers didn't even care about purple hearts, they weren't badges of honor. They used to be frowned upon. Some medics would be wounded 20 times before they even got a purple heart, and when they did, it was for less of an injury than the previous ones.
His TOD was only, what, 4 months? He didn't care to be there, he wanted out.

So, that newspaper says he wanted a deferment, but when he couldn't get it he enlisted in the Navy. He didn't go to the national guard, or go AWOL.
I am happy that he wasn't more seriously injured. I guess, with 3 purple hearts he should have been missing 3 limbs? Well, wasn't max Cleland missing more than that, and that didn't stop GOP from painting him as unpatriotic.
But that's irrelevant. The US government gave him those medals, so he doesn't have to apologize to anyone for having 3 purple hearts.
