Why do news apps have so many ads in them ?

Maybe the gathering and editing of "news" costs money and they use ad revenue to pay for that cost. Or were you looking for a more complex answer?

Maybe the publishers are looking for revenue streams to replace the one they lost with the increased usage of adblockers in web browsers.
