Newly installed rig has freezes during benchmarking and gaming

I have just built a system that has a problem with glitches, or very quick "freezes" during benchmarking using both 3DMark2001se (patched) and 3dmark03 (also patched). I installed UT and it does this during online play also. here is the system specs:

Abit AI7
2.4c @ 184FSB, 3.4ghz 1.65vcore
2 X 256mg pc3700, timings spd , 5:4 ratio\
OEM radeon 9800 pro, non O/C'd, 7-962-0312 catalyst driver
480 watt A+GPB psu
SP-94, idles @37-38, loaded @ 48-49 (shin etsu)

I just did a Fresh install of XP-Pro today, all the updates, Direct X 9b from the ABIT disk, (is this the problem? can't figure out how to uninstall it)

Although it is a bit quirky it completes the benchmarks, 2001 is 18,167, and 2003 is 5,788

any ideas?

Thanks, Trucker

I don't have much experience with the P4 setups but I do know that the 9800 series cards were known to have issues with higher FSB's on boards without dividers for AGP or those whose supposed dividers did not work properly.

You mention glitches. Do you mean artifacts or tearing or actual pauses in movement? Did you try it back at 133 FSB?? Is your board possibly implementing some form of "CPU thermal throttling" ?? Have you checked the bios settings in regards to AGP 8X and also have you tried disabling Fast writes?? That is also known to cause some issues.

Other than these ideas; how about using the CAT 3.7 drivers?? These seem to be the least buggy according to most. And no; you cannot uninstall DX9. Well sort of you can........ FORMAT!😉

See if anything good comes of my suggestions and let us know.🙂

You reinstalled windows and the system still crashes?

Have you even tempted to run the system without any over clocking? Your 2.4c isn't running stable above 3.0 obviously.

Captain Obvious says your overclock isn't stable. Bring it down. Run two instances of Prime95 on it for 12 hours straight. When you get zero errors, you're stable.

Right now you'd probably error out on the first test.

I reformatted (again), installed the newest catalyst drivers, and it still has the glitches. they are not artifacts, just very breif "freezing" on a frame. like it stops for a split second. I even lowered the fsb to a stock 200, it still does it? go figure? Thanks for your suggestions, i will go into the bios and see if I can find a cure.

No luck with the bios, there is no fast write to disable, I even tried moving the agp/pci lock up 2 notches, (a trick on my P4Pe board to fix onboard sound problems above 150 fsb). CPU fan control I already had disabled. nothing yet. I am still at stock 200 fsb. I am downloading the omega drivers now, the cat 3.7 and 4.3 version . I will try each of these and post back.

I uninstalled the catalyst drivers, installed the Omega 3.7 cat drivers, and the problem still existed. I remembered reading something about the uGURU program causing some difficulties so I unistalled it, and it now runs smooth as silk @ 184 FSB , 5:4 cpu to mem timing, and my 3dmark2001 score increased to 19,187. Aghhh, all is well !! Now to tweak and try and top 20,000................................... thanks all for the input!

Peace.

Did it!
