Hey everyone,

I was asked by one of my profs to help create a website that would act as an "online community" for life science students at the University of Toronto. Its main purpose is to provide links to relevant information, departments, course web sites, etc.

Although none of the links or major graphics are yet operational, I would appreciate any constructive criticism about the design of the website. It was designed to be user-friendly for newbies but also look half-decent.

I have tested it at 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024 in both IE6 and Opera7, and it is viewable in all combinations. I don't have Netscape installed, so I can't check it with that.

Thanks.

The temporary URL is http://members.rogers.com/lifesci/

Clean up the rounded edges at the top right and the very bottom. The top left rounded edges (inside and out) look nice and clean.

Otherwise, I like it - it's simple and it gets the job done. Good work.

I agree, clean up the rounded edges.

Otherwise it loads fast and looks clean/organized to me.

Hey I goto St. George Campus and I live in Scarboro! How does one get into doing these websites for UofT?

The course coordinator for biology actually emailed me at the beginning of the summer to let me know that he wanted to set up a community for Life Sciences students and was wondering if I was interested in helping him. The project is currently awaiting a funding assessment from the Provost.

I would suggest that you email the coordinators for the areas you are interested in, and ask them if you could help set up an online community.

Ok, I've cleaned up the images to the best of my ability, while still maintaining the flexibility over various resolutions and at different screen sizes (i.e. the site is still viewable even if the window isn't maximized).

Please let me know of any other improvements I could make to the design. Thanks everyone.

hehe, thanks isekii. The main reason why the rounded edges on the bottom and top-right aren't 100% "rounded" (i.e. a bit jagged) is because their sizes depend on the sizes of their corresponding cells. The browser will scale them to occupy their entire cells. The cell size in turn is a percentage of the browser's screen-size, which depends on the user's resolution and whether or not the window is maximized.

If anyone can help me with a better way of implementing the bottom and top-right edges, please do. Thanks.

Pretty good. Nice to see some fellow U of T students on here. BTW, what's that building they're building at st.george/bloor?

It's going to be a new residence for Woodsworth College, probably to help alleviate the strain from the upcoming double cohort.

That's pretty good...for an artsie. Just make it so that your "Careers" link points to this: http://home.golden.net/~boren/17.JPG ;)

Seriously now, for the links on the right I would do a roll-over. Make an image in PS, slice it and put it as default. Then add a glow effect to the text, slice it and then put that as mouseOver. Quick, simple and it looks good.

I am guessing you've already thought about putting a forum there?

hehe, isn't that right outside the LM / MP buildings? Damn engineers, always up to no good... ;)

Do you mean the links on the left? I'll consider it, but I think my prof would rather have the links as text as opposed to pictures.

Yeah, we'll be setting up two forums later this summer for first-year and second-year life science students. Third- and fourth-years will be lumped into a third forum to be developed next year.
